The point isn’t lowering the bar for quality. It’s raising the bar for how we measure systems and drive real improvements. This article reflects on that journey, from Flash Fill to today’s agentic systems, and why user flow, system evaluation, and human judgment matter in practice. Over the weekend I came across a fantastic perspective on why so much of our traditional tech stack feels… incomplete. Most enterprise systems are built as Systems of Record — optimized to capture end states, not the knowledge, reasoning, decision context, or expertise that leads to those outcomes. They tell us what happened, but rarely why, how, or what should happen next. And this line really stayed with me: “A System of Record cannot be the System of Action.” That distinction alone explains why true agentic layers are inevitable. We need systems that don’t just store data, but understand it, reason with it, and guide action in real time. Systems that become partners, not just databases. This is where intelligent agents fundamentally change the enterprise stack. They are the connective tissue between information and action — and that is easily a trillion-dollar opportunity.
