In partnership with the Center for Care Innovations, Genentech launched a Resilient Beginnings Collaborative, dedicated to addressing childhood adversity in pediatric safety net care settings. The program supported 7 San Francisco Bay Area safety net clinics over 24 months to:
Strengthen capacity to prevent and mitigate the effects of trauma in young children, taking a multigenerational approach;
Build on existing organization-led initiatives and interventions to address childhood adversity;
Enable organizations to further test, develop, and strengthen their role in addressing trauma and promoting resilience; and
Contribute to broader field-wide learning.

Selected by AcademyHealth, CAHMI, and Children’s Hospital Association to partner with Medicaid and federal agencies, commercial payers, and innovators from health systems across the country on a national agenda for integrated primary care including behavioral health and social services for children and families. Advancing value-based purchasing and incentives for providers and health systems to take on family-centered, “whole child” care, including trauma-informed, toxic stress management, and advance parenting support as a critical factor to prevent child maltreatment, establish resilience, and ensure all children have the best start to life.

Emerging real-time data sources, together with innovative data science techniques and methods - including artificial intelligence and machine learning - can help inform upstream suicide prevention efforts. Select social media platforms have proactively deployed these methods to identify individual platform users at high risk for suicide, and in some cases may activate local law enforcement, if needed, to prevent imminent suicide. To explore the current scope of activities, benefits, and risks of leveraging innovative data science techniques to help inform upstream suicide prevention at the individual and population level, the Forum on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual workshop series consisting of three webinars held on April 28, May 12, and June 30, 2022. This Proceedings highlights presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Ensuring a Better Crisis Response in 2022: Answering the call of 988
Psychology Today
See publicationIn this op-ed, Tom Insel (former head of the NIMH) and I highlight -
1) intentions of the federal transition from an 800 number for suicide prevention support to just 3 digits, '988': to divert callers away from 911 and connect them to local mental health services and resources
2) that its go live will be for all who seek help during a mental health crisis
3) that the rollout of 988, if done correctly, could be a catalyst to solve several thorny societal problems. -

Adverse Childhood Experiences Are Associated with Pediatric Asthma
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
Abstract describing the PEARLS Study findings validating that the Bay Area Research Consortium's trauma screening tool, the PEARLS, predicts risk for asthma. Those children with one or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were 2-3 times more likely to have asthma than those who had none, with a clear dose response. In other words, more and more adverse experiences predict higher and higher risk for having asthma in a population 0-12 yrs of age, whose median age was only 5-6 years old.

latchME

latchME was the world's first breastfeeding app to help mothers access community- and evidence-based services and supports in real-time, including clinical care, donor milk banks and peers. It was a predecessor to many of the digital-front door maternal health equity apps around today. In our first year we had over 100,000 downloads, a community of 62,000 actively engaged mothers on Facebook, and thousands of searchable professionals and resources.
