Had a great time speaking at the CyberPathway student chapter last week including a repeat session on the topic titled “The Four Planes Model: Data, Control, Management & Observability — and Where Security Hooks In.” We explored how every network, security, and cloud design and operations can be viewed through these four lenses — Data Plane – packets & segmentation Control Plane – routing, policies, and identity Management Plane – change, automation & governance Observability Plane – logs, metrics, and feedback loops One of the most engaging moments was when the group applied the model to analyze the recent AWS outage, mapping where each plane contributed to event, detection, control, and recovery. And perhaps the biggest compliment of all: a repeated attendee, saying he “wanted to extract more information” from the discussion. That kind of curiosity and hunger to learn is exactly what our industry needs. I believe mentoring isn’t just about sharing knowledge, but about sparking new ways of thinking. If our next generation of engineers start designing and securing infrastructure keeping fundamental design principles, we’re already shaping a more resilient digital future.
