You can learn a lot about a person's health from their pulse. But strapping on a device to track vital signs can be uncomfortable or expensive. A UC Santa Cruz team led by CITRIS's Katia Obraczka has proven that ambient Wi-Fi signals can monitor heart rate, using an approach they've called Pulse-Fi. “In addition to working on multiuser environments, we are also exploring other wellness and health care applications for Pulse-Fi,” Obraczka says, citing sleep apnea and breathing rates as examples.
