You can feel the stillness. You’re completely in the zone. A few months ago, our team had the honor of filming with Avion, a young man living with idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD). Four years ago, he entered a large high school in suburban Minneapolis-St. Paul as a standout athlete. Then everything changed. A sudden, serious illness turned his world upside down and kept him hospitalized for most of the school year. But today, Avion has just graduated high school. And his story is one you won’t forget. In just over 6 minutes, this mini-documentary captures Avion’s journey through his voice and those who know him best—his mom, grandma, principal, football coaches, physician Dr. Robin Williams, and close friends. Wonderful gathering of incredible communications leaders, getting real about what it takes to communicate with clarity. One of the common threads: thoughtful assessment and adaptability. All CEO tenures, at some point, come to an end. I’ve helped guide boards of directors through communicating leadership transitions for their health system CEOs, and there are a few elements key to a successful announcement. If you’re reading this as a communications lead at a health system, you know better than anyone that a retirement or job change at the top is not just about a new CEO. It’s also about the loss of a beloved community leader. With that in mind, approach the transition with the utmost confidentiality. Externally, patients and families may get nervous that their trusted care could change. Internally, there are a host of reasons not to tip off employees and partners. Keeping the news confidential – until it isn’t – is vital. Also: ▪️ Make sure to interview top stakeholders for their collective vision for the transition. ▪️ Understand the organization’s timeline. ▪️ Craft and approve your holding statement early. It’s critical in case of a leak. ▪️ Draft the plan. Everything looks different on paper. Give stakeholders the opportunity to sit with it and digest. As the communications leader, you set the calm. The folks at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine's Center for U.S. Healthcare Policy Research keep putting out useful resources. The latest is on IP, and it's another clip-n-save resource that includes both a sense of the existing state of play -- most meds get about 14 years of patent life, and only a couple of years before there is competition from other branded meds -- as well as some good historical context on what happens to innovation (bad things!) when patent rights get eroded.
