AI is coming to mammograms and here’s what a $16M study will test. Stephanie Winn McCorkle at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center reports on University of California, Davis co-leading the PRISM trial (Pragmatic Randomized Trial of Artificial Intelligence for Screening Mammography), supported by a $16 million PCORI award. The study will involve mammograms at academic medical centers and breast imaging facilities across California, Florida, Massachusetts, Washington, and Wisconsin, with seven leading academic centers participating: Participating centers include UCLA (administrative coordinating site), UC San Diego, Boston Medical Center (BMC), University of Miami, University of Washington, and University of Wisconsin-Madison Diana Miglioretti, PhD, dual principal investigator and lead of the study’s data coordinating center stated the following: “PRISM is the first large-scale randomized trial in the U.S. to evaluate the effectiveness of AI in breast cancer screening interpretation…” She then added: “There’s a lot of optimism that AI will improve care, but very few randomized trials have measured its real-world effectiveness.” On patients she said: “This study is our opportunity to generate independent, trustworthy evidence — with the patient perspective front and center…” Why it matters: 1. Preventative medicine: AI could improve early cancer detection and overall screening accuracy. 2. Patient experience: Integrating AI while keeping radiologist oversight ensures trust and safety. 3. Healthcare innovation: PRISM sets a model for future large-scale, patient-centered AI trials. Social Health, I'm told, is far more complex than traditional healthcare. To add to this complexity, most social care is provided through government and private funding and through volunteer work. To make matters even more taxing, data exchange between entities is near non-existent due to severe budgetary constraints. So it's exciting to see that we in California are taking big steps forward in social-health data interoperability. Today, the Healthcare Innovation published a short article on this topic. Here is a quick summary of the article by David Raths Organizations across the state, from United Ways of California to local Community Based Organizations (CBOs), like Housing for Health California (HHCA), are working together to solve one of the biggest pain points in care coordination: fragmented, manual data capture. United Ways of California, in partnership with nine local United Ways and 211 providers, launched a new Data Exchange Gateway to align with the California Health and Human Services Data Exchange Framework (DxF), a statewide initiative funded and mandated under Assembly Bill 133. This gateway is already live in 28+ counties and is helping CBOs securely exchange data—without having to duplicate effort across systems.). One example: HHCA, which serves unhoused individuals across 34 cities, adopted Lightning Step EHR and partnered with Orange County's United Way / 211OC (OCUW) to interoperate across seven CBOs. With support from OCUW’s data team and the new gateway, HHCA was able to integrate its workflows and case tracking across organizations in under six months—a process that typically takes years. This results in faster provider payments, better eligibility tracking, and meaningful outcomes for some of the most vulnerable people in the state. This is DxF in action. Kudos to United Way, HHCA, Lightning Step, and all the partners making this a reality. We chose a good subject for our march Autotech Council meeting, and after this year's CES, it seems even more obvious. Our meeting on the AI Defined Vehicle will show how it's a natural next step after the Software Defined Vehicle phase that we've been in Tesla launched the Model S in 2012. Now, most carmakers have SDVs. It's time to layer on the AI in user-facing roles, and in invisible functions managing the vehicle.
