Absolutely agree. To embed CQI in the culture all roads lead back to Deming's point 1. Leaders must have a constancy of purpose to improve the system that creates value. Lack of constancy of purpose is one of Deming’s 7 deadly diseases of Western management. Too busy chasing meaningless, poorly designed KPIs to work on resolving and preventing problems in the value stream is the first symptom.

The Lean thinking “doing more with less” is one of the most quoted and most misunderstood. Too often, it gets wrongly translated into “stretch people thinner” or “cut resources to the bone.” That’s not Lean. The real essence is about: 1. Eliminating waste 2. Optimizing processes 3. Delivering more value with the same effort One of my favorite Dilbert strips captures this gap perfectly - how organizations sometimes misapply Lean in ways that miss the whole point. The average person has 1,602 unread emails sitting in their inbox! Anyone out there dreaming of a clean inbox… anyone? 👀 Let’s tap into the power of 5S to bring order to the chaos 👇 Because who says Lean tools can’t help us win at everyday life? Instead of treating 5S as a one-time clean-up day, try using it as your secret productivity sauce: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain. Here’s how I apply the first three: 1. I created folders that made sense to me (organized by project). Pro tip: I didn’t add a “low priority” folder. Let’s be real… that’s where emails go to die. 🙈 2. This one stung a little… I tackled my thousands of emails on a PC (way faster than a phone), filtered by keywords, and deleted in batches, only keeping what I needed. 3. I moved emails I needed to keep, and that no longer required action, into the project folders I’d created. 4. I left emails that still needed action in my inbox, but only after asking myself: Will I actually act on this? If something was low priority, I let the person know and made a decision on the spot about whether it stayed or went. 🏆The reward? Imagine opening your inbox to 20, 10, 5, or even 1 message. That’s not a dream. That’s peace of mind! Now, with all the heavy lifting done… let’s keep it flowing with Standardize and Sustain: As I get new emails, I stay intentional (and remove waste): I've standardized how I treat every email following simple rules: ✔️ Done? Folder or delete. ✔️ Needs action (and will take it)? It stays. ✔️ I unsubscribe from emails I no longer read and adjust preferences to only get what’s truly meaningful. And let’s not forget the 6th S: Safety. 🧠 How much is emotional stability and a decluttered mental space worth to you? For me, it means clearer decisions, less stress, and being able to see my priorities. That’s stability. That’s mental health. When my inbox isn’t overflowing, I’m not overwhelmed before I even begin.
