Doro Enters Finnish Market as MVNO Focused on Seniors Doro Group, a company widely recognized for its simplified mobile phones designed for the elderly, is expanding its business model by launching a mobile operator service in Finland, as a mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO). The new service, marketed under Doro Connect, is specifically aimed at the senior demographic. Doro Connect is the fourth new MVNO to emerge in Finland recently, highlighting a trend of increased niche specialization within the telecommunications sector. This follows the establishment of Moi Mobiili, Oomi Mobiili (by the electricity seller Oomi), and Giga Mobiili (by retailer Gigantti). The company's promotional strategy emphasizes three key features: clear pricing structures, straightforward deployment, and accessible customer service staffed by personnel available via telephone, catering to users who prefer traditional support methods. Adhering to its principle of simplification, Doro's Finnish website currently features Doro Aito as its primary, subscription offering. The plan is priced at €24.99 per month and includes unlimited calls, unlimited text messages, unlimited MMS messages, and unlimited internet data for use within Finland. The internet speed for the subscription is stated to be 20 Mbit/s. The service operates without a fixed-term contract, allowing customers to terminate the subscription at any time. As an optional incentive, customers who commit to a 12-month subscription receive a Doro Leva L31 mobile phone free of charge. Doro Connect functions as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), meaning it does not possess its own mobile network infrastructure. Instead, the service pays the network operator Elisa for network access. The #DoroConnect subscription was initially launched in Sweden last summer and has since expanded its service to include Norway and now Finland. This expansion follows the acquisition of Doro in the autumn of 2024 by the Norwegian company Xplora, which is known for children's watch phones. The idea of simplifying mobile services for the elderly is not new. Martin Cooper, the inventor of the first handheld cellular phone, and his wife, Arlene Harris, were co-founders of the MVNO GreatCall, Inc. in 2006. They launched the Jitterbug phone and service, which featured large buttons and direct access to assistance. GreatCall was later sold to Best Buy in 2018 for $800 million in cash. GreatCall had over 900,000 subscribers at the time of the sale. The MVNO is still active today, under the new brand name: Lively. This history underscores a long-standing need for mobile solutions designed specifically around ease of use and safety features. Founded in Sweden in 1974, Doro has grown far beyond the Nordic region (and landline phones) to become the European market leader in senior-specialized mobile phones. Its products are carried by over 200 telecom operators, distributors, and retailers, primarily in Europe.

The race to specify and agree the key design parameters of 6G is moving quickly. We have yet to see a compelling route to the expected gains and improvements that a new generation of mobile connectivity will offer from any party though there are some interesting themes emerging around AI, machine learning and the up rating of the compute power in networks. Understandably, the carriers are nervous of another huge hardware investment cycle without a solid business case. The current geo-political situation will also have a large part to play in the commitment to a single global vision. Suppliers and carriers have been chastened by the 5G experience. Premature launches using sub-optimal infrastructure combined with a lack of killer use cases (at least for consumers) and slower adoption of 5G has meant the 6G specification is coming under a higher degree of scrutiny that one may have seen in the past. Many seek to argue that the 6G era won't just be about faster speeds; rather it will be defined by a fundamental shift from apps to AI agents.   Today’s networks must do more than simply connect people and devices – they must understand the world around them.   I’m proud to share that Ericsson has successfully demonstrated a live Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) proof of concept at our U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas. Using existing Massive MIMO radios on live infrastructure, the trial detected and located passive objects such as UAVs, showcasing how today’s network assets can unlock entirely new capabilities.
