If you want better answers from your data team, start by asking better questions. Too often, vague requests get tossed around like this: Can you check if retention improved last month? This isn’t a question. It’s an escape hatch—no decision, no context, no urgency. Here’s what that looks like in real life: A product team rolls out a new onboarding flow. A week later, someone asks: Hey, did retention improve? An analyst spends two days digging into cohorts, segmenting by signup date, checking old dashboards. Then someone jumps in: Actually, can we look at 14-day activation instead? So the whole thing gets redone. Now imagine if the original ask had been: We launched the new onboarding last week. If 14-day activation is below 30%, we’ll pause rollout and test variant B. Can we get that by Friday, split by traffic source? Same data. Clearer ask. Faster, more useful answer.
