My flights to California usually have views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, but this time it’s the Pacific Ocean. We’re heading to L.A for the OFC Conference, one I've been anticipating for months. Over the next few days, the global photonics community will be discussing the biggest challenge in computing and AI right now: how to move vast amounts of data efficiently at scale. Photonics has shifted so quickly from “competitive advantage" to "critical infrastructure", and massive investments have flowed in. Nearly $10B since the beginning of the year. The event brings together researchers, scientists, engineers, founders, and industry veterans from all corners of the world - many with deep academic roots - who've helped shape this industry for decades. And it's their pioneering work that has enabled these technologies to be in the global spotlight. Today’s panels will feature leaders from giants like Meta, Google, and Coherent. But if past OFC conferences are any indication, the most interesting insights won’t just come from the “big guys”. They’ll come from the new generation of innovative startups that are pushing the envelope like Lightmatter, Ayar Labs, Xscape Photonics Inc, Teramount, NcodiN, Salience Labs, and Mixx Technologies Inc. And make no mistake, there are a handful of founders who aren’t exhibiting, but will be quietly present, keeping their eyes on everything that's happening in the industry. I'm looking forward to hearing how they're each navigating the technology shifts, and addressing their own scaling to build strong teams. This is going to be a big week. California's RF/millimeter-wave startup, Movandi, has secured $40 million in funding to Accelerate Global 5G, Satellite, and Fixed Wireless Access Deployment. The round was led by a $20 million investment from ITHCA Group, the sovereign-backed technology investment firm driving innovation across the Middle East. Movandi’s RF chipsets, beamforming silicon, phased array antennas, and repeater systems have already transformed mmWave economics and performance. The company is leveraging these technologies to enable affordable FWA using 5G and Wi-Fi, non-terrestrial satellite communications, and advanced RF systems for high-throughput terrestrial and satellite networks. Micron Technology is undertaking massive construction projects to expand its production capacity amid a severe memory chip shortage. The company is investing $50 billion to more than double its Boise campus with two new wafer plants, expected to be operational by the end of 2028.
