Moreover, any cybersecurity practitioner needs to know what he or she is protecting and where to prioritize. Smart Grid Security serves not only to make the smart grid accessible to cybersecurity practitioners but to the media, policymakers, regulators, engineers, utility executives, and to the consumer as well. The book examines the interplay between the automation of the electric grid and security, with the goal to dispel myths and pursue a level-headed strategy that fully considers both the risk of not acting as well as the costs of acting.
Because some smart grid domains are more relevant for some than others, chapters are broken out to cover distinct parts of the smart grid—such as metering, distribution, and transmission that are frequently separated—how they work, how they interact, and the security challenges throughout. The book closes with future threats, challenges, and the future of the smart grid overall. It will be a welcome resource to industry professionals, regulators, and interested lay persons alike.

Today, CISA released Microsegmentation in Zero Trust, Part One: Introduction and Planning as part of its ongoing efforts to support organizations implementing zero trust architectures (ZTA), especially Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies. This guidance provides a high-level overview of microsegmentation, focusing on its key concepts, associated challenges and potential benefits, and includes recommended actions to modernize network security and advance zero trust principles. Microsegmentation is a critical component of ZTA that reduces the attack surface, limits lateral movement, and enhances visibility for monitoring smaller, isolated groups of resources. While the guidance focuses on FCEB references, its principles are applicable to any organization.
