If your game lives or dies on connection…why would you remove the human from it? I spent a lot of time at GDC hearing teams talk about using AI for voices. And I get it, budgets are tough. Especially in indie. But when it comes to performance, voice isn’t just a delivery system for lines. It’s emotion. It’s nuance. It’s culture. It’s lived experience. It’s the thing that makes a player feel something. And that will never come from a dataset. It comes from a human being who has spent years training, working, and honing their craft. There are so many incredibly talented voice actors out there, at every level, who bring depth, connection, and truth to the work. And there are ways to work within different budgets that still respect both the project and the performers. Going fully AI should not be the path forward. All that time, energy, and care you’ve put into your game? However, a crucial aspect of their work involves evaluating safety concerns that can impact the production's success and the well-being of the cast and crew. One of the primary considerations for tech scouts is ensuring that locations have adequate exits. They must assess emergency egress points to ensure that everyone can evacuate swiftly in case of an emergency. This includes identifying main entrances and additional exits that may not be immediately visible but are essential for a safe evacuation plan. Fire suppression systems are another critical focus area. Scouts need to evaluate whether a location has adequate fire safety measures in place, such as sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and clear pathways to exits. They should also check for flammable materials on-site, including decorations or props that might increase fire risks. Mold and environmental concerns are also paramount, especially in older buildings that may have histories of water damage. The presence of mold can pose serious health risks to the cast and crew, potentially impacting productivity and wellbeing. Tech scouts should look for signs of moisture, proper ventilation, and any history of mold issues before deciding to use a space. 🚀 From BASIC in ‘82 to Automated VFX Pipelines in ‘26 This weekend’s "fun project" is a deep dive into the future of post-production workflow. I’m currently building a Python script (with a little help from Claude) to bridge the gap between Avid and DaVinci Resolve for automated VFX pulls. The Workflow: Source: Avid AAFs with markers containing specific VFX naming conventions. The Bridge: A Python script that talks to the Resolve API to interpret those markers. The Output: Automated creation of 16-bit EXR image sequences for the VFX vendor. The Specs: Full respect for original camera color science + custom handles included. It’s one of those "work smarter, not harder" moments. Instead of spending hours on manual exports, I’m teaching the machines to do the heavy lifting. So far, the prototype is showing a lot of promise, and I’m optimistic I’ll have a fully functional version by the end of the weekend. It’s wild to think about the journey from writing lines of BASIC on a Commodore 64 back in 1982 to using LLMs to script complex color and editorial pipelines today. The tools have changed, but the thrill of "making it work" is exactly the same.
