Precision fermentation is compounding at 47% annually, faster than early-stage solar ever did, and most venture capital still files it under "pharma" and moves on. In 2020, McKinsey published a report estimating that 60% of the physical inputs to the global economy could be produced biologically. Materials, chemicals, fuels, food ingredients, all of it. Up to $4 trillion a year in direct economic impact across roughly 400 use cases, almost all scientifically feasible at the time of publication. That was before AI rewrote the timeline. DeepMind's AlphaFold predicted the structure of virtually all 200 million known proteins in about a year. Work that Demis Hassabis estimated would have taken a billion years of PhD time at traditional rates. Protein engineering that took years now takes months. Strain optimization that took months now takes weeks. The McKinsey window was 10 to 20 years. AI compressed it. This is already showing up in the Juniper Ventures portfolio: - Jacqueline Ros Amable and the team at Matereal are replacing petrochemical-derived polyurethane with bio-based alternatives, targeting one of the most ubiquitous plastics in the global economy - Nathan Ratledge and the team at Alta Resource Technologies use engineered proteins to selectively extract critical minerals and rare earth elements from e-waste. Biology replacing conventional mining chemistry. - Vineet Rajgarhia and the team at Erg Bio are converting waste biomass into synthetic aviation fuels and biochemicals with their Aspire technology, backed by a Department of Defense award to build domestic biofuel capacity Three companies. Three completely different industries. Plastics, mining, fuels. Same underlying thesis: biology is becoming the manufacturing platform. McKinsey mapped the destination six years ago. AI dramatically shortened the road. Precision fermentation isn't a subcategory of pharmaceuticals. It's the next manufacturing platform. The investors who figure that out first will capture the defining returns of the next decade. Don't Build a Better Wheat Farm" - Why Defensibility Stakes Are Higher in Deep Tech Just published a new piece on my "Ignore the Confusion" blog, building on thoughtful insights from Eric Ver Ploeg at Tunitas Ventures about startup defensibility. Eric's core thesis: Too many startups pitch like wheat farmers - "huge TAM, slow incumbents, growing market, domain expertise" - but fail to think through long-term defensibility until it's too late. From a deep tech perspective, the stakes are even higher: ** Unlike software, deep tech founders must commit to defensibility strategies from day one - their funding depends on it ** Patent vs. trade secret decisions are often difficult to reverse and shape your entire competitive strategy ** Even "picks and shovels" providers (the tools that make industries more efficient) become commodities without proper moats The key insight that resonates: Defensibility can't be retrofitted. Whether you're building software or deep tech, your moat must be architected into the business model from the start. Recent moves include: Proterra Investment Partners acquiring AcreTrader, pairing $3.4B+ in AUM with a farmland investment marketplace already connected to 44,000+ acres ConnectedFi absorbing Conduit, doubling down on embedded financing for ag retailers and manufacturers Growers Edge acquiring FarmTest, adding field-level validation tech to its warranty-backed financial products Bonsai Robotics acquiring Farm-ng, uniting AI-driven autonomy software with modular ag robotics hardware Miraterra Technologies Corporation acquiring Trace Genomics, combining soil DNA analytics with spectroscopy for full-spectrum soil health insights John Deere acquiring Sentera, bolstering its precision ag portfolio with advanced aerial imaging, analytics, and sensor technologies after the company raised $68MM FarmOp Capital selling $250M in farm loans to The Carlyle Group, expanding origination capacity and unlocking more capital for independent row crop farmers 🧐 But the real story is buying patterns Beyond the usual strategics — TELUS, Ever.Ag, the ag chem giants, and the OEM crowd — a new class of buyers is moving in. Valstone and a cohort of Constellation Software Inc.–style consolidators are laser-focused on agtech. These are operators that buy niche B2B platforms, hold them forever, and quietly stack returns through precise capital allocation and operational rigor. The ag value chain is built for their model: a fragmented tech stack, sticky customer relationships, and recurring revenue streams that can be scaled and cross-sold with minimal churn. And they’re not alone. KKR, TA Associates, Banneker Partners, and other PE heavyweights are sizing up the category as their next major play — using the post-2021 valuation reset as an entry point they may not see again for a decade. For them, this isn’t a downturn; it’s the perfect moment to buy quality assets, consolidate the landscape, and set the stage for long-term dominance. 📉 Why now? Many venture-backed agtechs have great products and market share but lack the runway to scale. PE sees an opening to consolidate point solutions into broader platforms. The shift from “growth at all costs” to sustainable profitability aligns perfectly with the PE operating model. 📈 What’s next?
