This raises an important question: why *doesn't* conservation funding work like infrastructure funding already? Conservation areas are immensely valuable to society - yes, even to the people who live in sterile concrete apartment blocks and go to work in equally sterile concrete office towers (as I did for decades). This is a fascinating article and worth reading in full.

What is it that really stands out for participatory grant making processes? For the Water Justice Find jointly funded by Simavi and #Womenwin, where I have the privilege of serving as global advisor, it means working with community-embedded organisations and leaders to get women to come together as a group to seek grants for solutions to their critical access-to-water challenges. There are several gamechangers here: 1. The choice of the solution is based on the articulation of a collective need, not for individual gains. 2. The process is based on foundations of mutual trust, where each women trusts the other to be empathetic to her needs. 3. Mutually agreed goals lead to a much higher level of ownership and agency among these women to see the project through in an efficient and effective manner. 4. Typically, the group takes ownership of the after-installation maintenance as well, contributing to a higher probability of building out a more sustainable asset base. 5. The process offers the opportunity to building community-based platforms that have the potential to bargain harder on other asks too! While the news along our coasts is often bleak, Surfrider's Climate Action Program provides an opportunity to for climate optimism while building a community of coastal Defenders across the nation. Instead of maladaptive "protection" measure like seawalls or beach renourishment, the program works with nature to build ecosystem level resilience to climate change impacts. In its first (formal) year, the CAP program has: 🏄‍♀️Engaged more than 2,000 volunteers 🌱Planted over 55,000 native plants ❗️Removed over 10,000 pounds of invasive species 🏝Restored more than 20 acres of coastal habitat

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR NATURE-BASED WATER AND CLIMATE SOLUTIONS IN WESTERN LAKE MICHIGAN The Daybreak Fund is now accepting pre-applications for 2026 funding, with at least $1.3M available to support nature-based climate solutions that improve water quality and advance social equity. Since launching in 2023, the Fund has awarded nearly $5M across the Western Lake Michigan region. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, Tribal Nations, and Tribal organizations working in Wisconsin's Lake Michigan Basin and Lake County, Illinois. 🗓️ Pre-applications are due April 10, 2026.
