As AI-generated media continues to blur the line between human and machine communication, traditional authentication methods are no longer enough. Many universities, including the University of Washington and California State University Long Beach, have already introduced AI-use guidelines for graduate students, recognizing that AI is now a central part of research, communication, and innovation. While universities can develop and enforce AI-use guidelines, involving graduate students in creating their own complementary guidelines may be even more valuable. When students help define how AI should be used, the goal becomes education, not restriction. Graduate programs can then focus on building AI literacy, helping students use these tools effectively, critically, and ethically. I am sure there are such courses in many universities. For example, in our graduate “Bootcamp” course, students are introduced to academic and research skills along with a new section on AI Literatures and Ethics. Through discussions and activities, students and their instructor create their own AI-use guidelines to follow throughout their studies. In this way, the final guideline reflects the instructor’s input and consent, ensuring both student ownership and academic integrity. This experience builds ethical awareness, critical thinking, and accountability, preparing students not just to adapt to the AI era but to lead it responsibly. About 18 months after we published the model in Nature Magazine Communications, we finally came up with a name! The ASU/USYD Heat-Lim model: Human/Environmental Adaptation and Threshold Limits Model (HEAT-Lim) is based on our 2023 paper: https://lnkd.in/eDq4_ywq It enables users to estimate both the #heat stress conditions that will limit future human “survivability” (due to critical heat stroke) and human “liveability” (an inability to maintain a steady core temperature) both in shade and sun. The code for the model is open source and we are working behind the scenes to keep improving its functionality and breadth of applications. Coming soon will also be a series of collaborative papers that examine the new insights we gain from these models, and human studies that seek to validate these modelled upper limits.
