One common misunderstanding in K–12 technology is the idea that once something is installed, configured, or deployed… It’s done. But in reality, there’s no such thing as “set it and forget it” in K-12 IT. Not with devices, not with security, not with cloud tools, and definitely not with user access. Behind the scenes, IT teams are (or should be) constantly: -Updating systems and patching vulnerabilities -Reviewing logs and monitoring alerts -Reassessing permissions and access levels -Replacing aging hardware -Evaluating new risks as threats evolve -Supporting instructional needs that change every semester When people only see the finished product, the working Wi-Fi, the devices that “just work,” the systems that stay online, it’s easy to underestimate the maintenance behind it. Technology isn’t a one-time project. It’s a living system that requires care, attention, and continuous improvement. For districts working toward stronger security and better reliability, the biggest shift is helping people understand that IT isn’t just a checklist, it’s an ongoing process. 🔧 From Stuxnet to Today: Upping Our Industrial Cybersecurity Game In my last post, we examined Stuxnet, a cyber weapon engineered to manipulate PLCs and physically destroy centrifuges at Iran’s Natanz facility. It wasn’t just code. As former NSA and CIA Director Michael Hayden put it: “We have entered into a new phase of conflict in which we use a cyber weapon to create physical destruction. Somebody has crossed the Rubicon.” That attack revealed a critical blind spot in industrial cybersecurity. Legacy Windows systems, unsecured USB drives, and unmonitored PLC instructions created the perfect conditions for sabotage. Stuxnet became a benchmark case study in how digital attacks can cause physical damage. A 2016 IEEE paper noted: “The attack reshaped awareness across critical infrastructure sectors. Although protections lagged, strategic discussion changed permanently.” So what has changed? What are modern ICS, SCADA, and OT environments doing today to stay ahead? ⚙️ How Modern ICS and OT Systems Are Responding Since Stuxnet, critical infrastructure operators have revamped their cybersecurity strategies. OT is no longer treated as a silo. It is now recognized as essential to national security and operational resilience. Today’s approaches include: 🛡️ OT-native endpoint protection to manage USBs, lock applications, and monitor integrity 🔍 Passive asset discovery that maps network flows without disrupting live operations 🔥 ICS-aware firewalls that parse OT protocols like Modbus and DNP3 🤖 Anomaly detection powered by AI to catch unusual behavior before it spreads 🚧 Zero trust segmentation to isolate critical systems and prevent lateral movement 🔐 Quantum-safe encryption pilots, like the one securing Oman’s power grid 🤝 Collaborative IT-OT teams trained to respond with both engineering and cybersecurity expertise These shifts show how cybersecurity is now embedded into the design and operation of modern industrial systems. 🛡️ Real-World Example: TXOne Networks’ Stellar One example of these changes is TXOne Networks’ Stellar, an endpoint protection platform built for OT environments. It addresses the types of gaps that Stuxnet exploited: - Locks down systems to only run trusted applications - Controls USB access and device behavior - Operates in offline and air-gapped setups - Functions autonomously even without central management - Works alongside ICS-aware firewalls for layered protection Stellar reflects how the field has matured from reactive patching to proactive resilience. 📣 We’ve made progress since 2010, but threats keep evolving. Network problems rarely wait for a quiet moment. They show up on Friday afternoons, during client calls, or when a critical update stalls halfway through. That pattern signals something simple: people who understand networks keep organizations moving. Help desks run smoother. Security work lands on firmer ground. Project risk drops, not because of a buzzword, but because someone can read what the network is telling them and act on it. I am teaching another course! CompTIA Network+ (NET-3100W2) at Wake Tech. The focus is practical: How traffic really moves through the OSI model IP addressing and subnetting that make sense under pressure Routing, switching, and wireless configuration Remote access, high availability, and recovery planning Network tools, logs, and commands that reveal what is going wrong Common attack types and security controls that reduce damage The course is fully online through MS Teams. That means anyone with a stable connection can join, not only people in Wake County. Working professionals, career changers, and early IT staff can all participate without commuting or relocating. Online delivery brings a trade-off. Flexibility is higher, yet the responsibility to stay engaged also grows.
