In this current iteration of production readiness and solid foundations, it's time to iterate Stompy's file ingestion. Voyage AI by MongoDB just dropped their January models with capabilities that change the economics, so here's what's what with file-based data ingestion and retrieval. The Voyage 4 series introduced a shared embedding space across all their model tiers. This matters because document corpora are fixed assets while queries are variable costs. Embed once with voyage-4-large for maximum accuracy, query forever with voyage-4-lite at a fraction of the cost. Same vector space, interchangeable results. When accuracy requirements change, upgrade the query model without re-embedding a single document. Their MoE architecture benchmarks 14% higher than OpenAI's v3 Large while cutting serving costs 40%. The multimodal model processes PDFs as screenshots rather than extracted text. PDF parsing is a problem that looks solved until tables span pages, columns interleave, or someone embedded fonts creatively. Screenshot approach at $0.60 per thousand pages bypasses all of it. The unified encoder also solves the modality gap problem — in dual-tower architectures, text and images cluster by type rather than meaning, so "photo of a dog" lands far from actual dog photos. Single transformer, single space, semantic clustering that actually works. The chunking strategy follows a parent-child pattern that separates finding from understanding. Small chunks of 400-512 tokens give precise retrieval — when someone searches for a specific concept, you want the paragraph that discusses it, not the entire chapter. But #LLMs need context to reason properly, so matched chunks expand to 2000-token parents before reaching the model. The 50-token overlap prevents the edge case where a key sentence gets split across chunks and becomes unfindable. Contextual enrichment prepends 50-100 tokens of document-level context to each chunk before embedding. A chunk saying "use voyage-4-lite for queries" means nothing in isolation. Tedious preprocessing that determines whether the system finds answers or just finds text that pattern-matches. Hybrid search exists because semantic similarity and keyword matching fail in complementary ways. Vector search finds conceptual neighbors but misses exact terminology. BM25 keyword search catches specific terms but misses paraphrases. Combining them with reciprocal rank fusion, then reranking the top candidates with a cross-encoder, yields 67% fewer retrieval failures than either approach alone. Fetch 40 candidates broad, rerank to 5 precise.
