Can you be yourself AND be professional? I recently delivered a professional development workshop at Georgia State University: Your Voice, Your Style: Communicating Authentically as a Leader. We covered: → How to decode dress codes (because "Business Casual" means 10 different things) → The mistakes that accidentally tank your first impression especially during job interviews before you even speak → How to build a professional wardrobe on a student budget → What "authentically appropriate" actually looks like in practice From the questions and feedback, the biggest takeaway for many students was realizing that what you wear is not only an effective communication tool, but that they don't have to choose between being professional and being themselves. Professional dress doesn't look one way. My advise: learn the rules. Then you add yourself. Calling all Program directors, Dean of Students, Career Services directors, and Student Affairs leaders: Your students know they need to "dress professionally." But do they know what that actually means or what it looks like in 2026? Don't leave them to figure it out on their own and potentially jeopardize opportunities that could change their careers. I almost started this post the usual way… “This week I had the chance to attend another inspiring session at Atlanta Tech Village: Talk Like a Visionary: Storytelling That Scales. The presenter shared helpful tips, and I met some amazing people…” blah, blah, blah 🗣️ Sounds ok, right? But from what I have learnt: ⛔️it falls flat… ⛔️too surface… ⛔️too predictable… ⛔️missing the spark🔥 Actually, it’s exaclty what we were taught NOT to do! Take two 🎬 … this time I’m putting my #newskills to the test: ✨ Imagine a room full of #founders, #leaders, and #changemakers, feeling inspired as Erin Peterson, the multiple-time Emmy-winning journalist, founder of Scout Stories and storytelling force whose work has changed laws and inspired movements, showed us how to turn vision into momentum. She reminded us that we are all #visionaries when we speak with #clarity, #creativity, and #conviction, and that the real magic happens when you bring #emotion into your story. Because emotion is what builds #trust, #credibility, #connection, and #momentum…the kind that inspires #action, creates mutual #investment for all parties involved, and stays with people long after the words fade. Erin also left us with this Susan David reminder that truly spoke to my heart: ❤️ “Your future is not limited by your past relationships and patterns. You own your story, it doesn’t own you. And you can choose to rewrite it whenever you want.” ❤️ That’s the #mindset I’m carrying with me, especially in this season of #reinvention. I’m rewriting my own story with #resilience, #authenticity, #connection, and #gratitude. I was also so happy to reconnect with Hilton Thompson, the soul 🚀 of these events. With her big #smile and #passion for building #community, she makes sure everyone feels #seen and #supported. She is my #rolemodel, and I’m grateful for the example she sets. 💡And here’s the best part: the conversations afterward: 🎯meeting #newpeople 🎯building #authentic #connections 🎯realizing that every introduction is a #gift and an opportunity to #learn from one another’s journeys and #help each other in ways that never seemed possible So here’s my “mic-drop” #takeaway: 🎤Your story isn’t just what you tell, it’s what inspires people to remember you long after the words are gone. ✨ What story are you rewriting today?☺️

What would you do if your audience couldn't see you or your slides? This past weekend, I had the honor to work with the Florida Business Enterprise Program (BEP), The mission of the BEP is to provide people who are legally blind with rewarding and profitable entrepreneurial ventures, broaden their economic opportunities, and invigorate all blind people to be self-supporting, while dispelling misconceptions about blind people by showcasing their abilities. The BEP administers one of the largest vending and food service programs operated by people who are legally blind in the United States. The BEP prides itself in allowing visually impaired entrepreneurs independence in their day-to-day operations, while at the same time providing continual support through professional business consultants and educational workshops. I was invited to speak because one of their members heard me speak at their National Conference. As a professional speaker I pride myself in making all of my programs an engaging interactive learning experience. Here are few ways I work to make my programs impactful for people with a visual impairment: 1. Paint pictures with your words. Slow down and be very descriptive during your presentation. Let people hear the images you want them to "see." Let people know where you are in the room or where people are who ask questions. Describe in detail what you look like or how you are moving. The people you work with appreciate when you make time to "set the table" before you "serve the meal." 2. Make content accessible before you step on stage. Provide notes or slides in screen-reader friendly formats so everyone can fully participate. 3. Prioritize clarity over flash. Meet with the organization ahead of time to understand participants wants and needs. This will help you establish clear structure, strong pacing, and intentional pauses. 4. Connect through voice and presence. Your tone, energy, and authenticity become your “visuals.” People feel your passion before they see your slides. This experience reminded me: when you strip away distractions, the heart of speaking is human connection. And that’s something everyone can see. 5. Let them participate. Your program can't be engaging if you don't allow the audience to engage. I made time for attendees to share their experiences with me, so I could understand what it was like to be a visually impaired or blind business owner. Participation leads to understanding and as attendees shared with me...a program that isn't boring. Bonus - Be sure to add alt text to all images you post on social media and your website. This allows for people who lack vision to "see" your photograph or image because you can describe the image to them.
