Quick question for L&D folks: Do your eLearning templates actually make development easier? I have used Articulate Storyline since beta. I lived through the years when variables were the only reliable component, when states failed, and when built-in quizzes broke. Developers learned one hard truth early: Pretty does not equal functional. That experience made me skeptical of most templates on the market. Many templates are designed to serve up content, not to orient adult learners. They look interactive, but they rarely help learners understand where they are, why it matters, or how their choices affect what comes next. Interaction alone is not learning. Most templates also assume every learner starts at zero. Adults rarely do. What is usually missing are structures for decisions with consequences, branching that acknowledges prior knowledge, practice that mirrors real situations, and feedback that changes the path forward. Here is where the conversation needs to shift. Templates should do more than make slides look consistent. They should support how adults actually learn. A strong template should: 🕶️ Orient learners with clear structure, progress, and navigation so they understand where they are, why it matters, and what comes next 🖼️ Tell the story of the content so each screen has a clear role in the learning 🎯 Align to the goal of the course so tutorials, reference libraries, and scenario-based experiences feel intentionally different 🎨 Adapt easily to brand and content changes without rebuilding everything 💽 Support data, systems, and future integration ⬅️ Anticipate change instead of locking teams into fixed layouts At one point, I led a template initiative that forced us to rethink what a template actually is. We paired instructional design storyboards with one-to-one matching authoring structures. Designers assembled courses from proven page types. Developers mapped content instead of rebuilding layouts. Custom pages were limited, not forbidden. The result was not just faster development. It was fewer errors, cleaner handoffs, and far more consistent learning experiences. That experience clarified something for me. A good template is not a slide starter kit. It is a learning system. What has your experience with eLearning templates actually been?
