Most higher ed identity strategies sound great on paper: Standardize on a modern cloud IdP. Centralize policy and access. Retire legacy federation. In practice, IAM teams know it’s rarely that clean. Institutions are standardizing on platforms like Microsoft Entra for workforce and student access while still needing to support federated research services, vendors, consortia, guest users, and long-tail applications that were never designed to live inside a single IdP. This creates a very real architectural tension: You’re modernizing identity and carrying federation forward at the same time. What’s notable is that this isn’t just anecdotal anymore. Industry analysis is surfacing the same pattern, and Microsoft’s own Entra architecture explicitly documents multilateral federation and intermediary models as a supported way to make these environments work. The hardest IAM problems aren’t inside Entra or inside your federation. They live in the space between them. That’s exactly the gap Bridge was designed to address - not by replacing identity platforms or forcing a rip-and-replace, but by managing trust, flow, and policy between systems that were never meant to work together.
