They're drowning. You can't replicate overhearing a Senior Engineer solve a tricky problem. You can't replace the casual "hey, can you look at this?" moments. They've traded mentorship for Slack messages. Pair programming for async code reviews. Learning through observation for scheduled "check-ins." The result? Juniors taking 2x longer to become productive. Higher turnover. More burnout. But companies keep hiring them remotely because it's "cheaper" and "inclusive." Then wonder why they quit after 6 months. Remote work is fantastic for experienced engineers. For juniors, it's career sabotage wrapped in work-life balance promises. Are we sacrificing the next generation of developers for convenience?

An AP report on LA County courts piloting AI tools for parts of judicial workflow is a useful reminder that AI in legal work is no longer a hypothetical conversation. What stands out to me is not the headline itself, but the contrast. Court use is high-stakes and deserves caution. For most law firms, the better starting point is far less dramatic: summarising long documents, keeping deadlines visible, tightening internal workflows, and cutting down the admin friction that steals time from billable work. That is where a lot of firms can get practical value right now. Not by asking AI to replace judgment, but by using it to reduce the repetitive work around that judgment. When a dev leads with “clean architecture,” I pause. If they push for the perfect setup before writing a single feature, I ask why? It’s not that quality doesn’t matter. It’s that context does. Perfect code doesn’t help if no one needs what you built.

It feels like software engineering is starting to pick up again! Over the past few weeks, the level of interaction has noticeably increased. More conversations with candidates who are open to moving. More engagement from clients who are planning hires rather than just talking about them. I’m also seeing more momentum around funding rounds and early-stage planning, which usually feeds into hiring shortly after. It feels less reactive and more intentional than it did earlier in the year. That doesn’t mean everything is suddenly easy. But the intent is there. The conversations are happening earlier. The market feels more active and more considered. What are you seeing in the software engineering market right now?

In the early days of code bootcamps, hiring grads was hard because we didn’t really know what to do with them. The company I worked for established a code school -> QA Engineer -> SWE pipeline and had a ton of success both getting value and training people. In a world of AI enhanced engineers, I think we go back to that. Manual QA has never been more important or effective.
