The Department of Energy's continued reversal of grant funding for carbon capture and sequestration projects is detrimental to long-term US power development. Without these projects to further explore decarbonization options for gas generation, existing grid generation as well as new developments will face hurdles to comply with state and regional emissions standard that are effectively impossible without carbon capture and sequestration. The dissolving of the Office of Clean Energy Demonstration and associated funding efforts from the previous administration, while providing near term cost savings, will set capital investment in US power decarbonization back decades. This will make new power investment challenged, and the US consumer will ultimately bear the brunt of cost increases due to lack of infrastructure growth. https://lnkd.in/gcr6cSbF

A major signal for the CCS industry: The U.S. DOE just canceled $3.7B in carbon capture and decarbonization project awards—including high-profile efforts from Calpine, ExxonMobil, and Ørsted. The reason? Concerns over project viability, taxpayer ROI, and alignment with energy goals.
