I recently learned about a cardiology clinic built specifically for South Asians: SSATHI at Stanford University. It made me pause. Why would we South Asians need our own heart-disease program at one of the world's top medical institutions? Then you look at the data: 1) In California, South Asians have the highest rate of hospitalization for coronary artery disease, 4x higher than any other ethnic group. 2) 25% of heart attacks in South Asians happen under age 40, 50% happen under age 50 3) South Asians will comprise 25% of the world's population, yet account for over 50% of the world's cardiovascular deaths. This isn't random. It's an inherited pattern. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. South Asian biology was shaped by centuries of scarcity, low protein intake, and metabolic efficiency, all adaptations to help ancestors survive. Some research suggests we have smaller coronary arteries, which means plaque becomes dangerous earlier & at lower levels. On top of higher risks, the traditional annual workups don't look at the deeper markers—like detailed cholesterol breakdowns or inflammation signals—that actually matter for our community. So important risks often get missed. Your health isn't just your habits. It's also your ancestry, your physiology, and the evolutionary backstory that came before you. This is nothing to be "fearful" of. It's just that, once you understand it, you can take a far more personalized approach with early screening, prevention, and lifestyle. This is just one example. Every community deserves healthcare designed around its own biology. There's a large opportunity and impact for physicians who are specialized in this (e.g. physicians who specifically focus on South Asians). p.s. SSATHI stands for South Asian Translational Heart Initiative at Stanford. "Sathi" also means friend in several SA languages...very fitting for such a thoughtful program :)

When I talk about doctors becoming builders I’m not talking about them using any of the off the shelf vibe coding platforms that’s made for anyone to build anything. We’ve already seen what that world looks like with SMB e-commerce tech from Shopify, wix, and Squarespace. Where they may offer a template or two for therapists or a medspa, but that’s about it. The truth is platforms where anyone can build “anything” is not actually useful for “anyone” in healthcare because these anything systems don’t have time to build for compliance, security, or patient health data when they’re building for ANYONE. Much less EHR-native integrations that’s absolutely critical for doctors and clinicians to deliver patient care. However, vibe coding did play a major part in creating a shift in user behavior, where non-technical users could access technical tools for prototyping and in some instances create full production deployments. What we’re doing at Cline - The Doctor’s Technical Co-Founder🧑‍💻 is taking this concept and applying it to healthcare with an end to end custom environment. This is a new code development infrastructure built FOR DOCTORS to build and DEPLOY their own apps and agents 100% independently, and backed by the security and assistance of 24/7 maintenance managed by their in-house AI CTO. There’s gonna be a big washout of SF startups and it will be because founders with weak missions and weaker recruiting abilities held out for top talent that was out of their league and didn’t do what it took to get them when they had the chance. Will miss out on lower-profile but equally good necessary talent in the meantime and miss key deliverables and funding milestones as a result. FAFO!!!

California just became the first state to regulate AI “companion” chatbots. Why health tech should care. Governor Newsom signed SB 243, a law aimed at chatbots designed to build relationships or provide emotional/social interaction. It takes effect January 1, 2026 and requires: clear AI disclosure, age verification/under-18 safeguards, break reminders for minors, and protocols to detect and respond to suicidal ideation or self-harm—plus documentation/reporting of how those protocols are used. Think “companion” and “role-play” bots, not generic search. For healthcare builders, this hits closer than it looks. Many “coaches,” symptom navigators, or loneliness/mental-wellness tools already blur the line between utility and companionship. If your product chats with users about emotions—or risks being used that way—you’ll need age gating, crisis-escalation pathways (human handoff + referrals), and on-screen disclosure that the agent isn’t a human. Expect logs, auditability, and updated content policies for minors to become table stakes. One more nuance: Newsom vetoed a separate bill that would have broadly restricted minors’ access to chatbots. The state’s direction, at least for now, is safeguards over bans—but copycat rules in other states (and app-store enforcement) are likely.
