My career long focus has been automation and observability. Infrastructure should blend into the background and enable rapid developer loops. Core Strengths Infrastructure-as-Code at Scale: My career spans datacenters, ISPs and SaaS companies, each has required configuration-as-code. As I moved into SaaS, I adopted tools like Ansible and Terraform and a "cattle, not pets" mentality. AWS and Platform Fundamentals: With over a decade in AWS and close to 15 years in the Linux server space, I know what it takes to scale production in the cloud. Observability to Outcomes: Observability is the key to reliable systems and is a prerequisite to automation. You have to know what's going on and be able to see patterns. Languages, systems & keywords: I have deep experience in Kubernetes, Linux, Bash, Python, Golang, Java, SAP HANA, MySQL, Postgres, Redis, All core AWS infra services such as EC2(ECS, EKS, Spot...), Cloudwatch, RDS, Route53, Elastic Load Balancing and I am still quite comfortable with foundational network technologies and hosting outside of AWS.

The moment you mention 𝗞𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 in a Devops interview, expect a deep dive Here are 17 Kubernetes questions I was asked that dive into architecture, troubleshooting, and real-world decision-making: 1. Your pod keeps getting stuck in CrashLoopBackOff, but logs show no errors. How would you approach debugging and resolution? Answer:- Check: kubectl describe pod for livenessProbe, readinessProbe, and OOMKilled. Debug: Resource limits too low, misconfigured probes, or failing commands in the entrypoint. Fix: Tune probes or increase CPU/memory requests/limits. Check container start command for logic errors. 2. You have a StatefulSet deployed with persistent volumes, and one of the pods is not recreating properly after deletion. What could be the reasons, and how do you fix it without data loss? Answer: Cause: PVCs are tied to specific StatefulSet pod names (pod-0, pod-1, etc.). Fix: Ensure PVC still exists and matches the pod name. Do not delete PVCs manually. Restart StatefulSet if needed with kubectl rollout restart. 3. Your cluster autoscaler is not scaling up even though pods are in Pending state. What would you investigate? Answer: Check: kubectl describe pod for unschedulable reason. Fix: Ensure: Node group has scaling enabled Requests are not too large for a node No taints preventing scheduling Pod has tolerations and nodeSelector/affinity match 4. A network policy is blocking traffic between services in different namespaces. How would you design and debug the policy to allow only specific communication paths? Answer: Debug: Use kubectl get networkpolicy and test with netshoot or busybox pods. Use labels, not IPs. 5. One of your microservices has to connect to an external database via a VPN inside the cluster. How would you architect this in Kubernetes with HA and security in mind? Answer: Options: Use a sidecar VPN container or a VPN DaemonSet Route DB traffic via a private network interface (e.g., VPC peering) Use NetworkPolicy, TLS, and secrets management for secure access HA: Run multiple VPN pods behind a ClusterIP or use a LoadBalancer. 😊

On October 19-20, AWS experienced a major disruption in its N. Virginia (us-east-1) region. The incident began with elevated error rates in Amazon DynamoDB API calls (triggered by a latent DNS race‐condition) which cascaded into connection failures for new EC2 instance launches, health‐check issues in Network Load Balancer (NLB) and broader knock-on effects across Lambda, Redshift and other services. 👉 Key takeaways Even the most mature cloud services can be impacted by subtle automation failures (in this case, DNS update logic). Shared dependencies matter: issues in one foundational service (DynamoDB’s DNS) propagated across many other services. 👉 What this means for us If you're architecting for high-availability: ensure you have resilience not just at the compute/storage level, but at “invisible” layers like DNS, routing, control‐plane services. Multi-region & failover strategies: when an issue is regional and deep (us-east-1 in this case), having replicas or services in other regions may help.
