The American Innovation Engine Is Still Running On last week’s Making Money with Charles Payne, I spoke about the cultural and business roots that allow companies like #NVIDIA, #Amazon and #Meta Platforms to scale at a global level from here in the U.S. With fewer barriers to failure, lots of ready capital, and more room to innovate, we’re seeing the American dream of entrepreneurship live on. I also discussed how the current market isn’t just about the “Mag Seven”—AI is beginning to seep into enterprise activity across the board and will eventually show up in better margins beyond the tech giants. Finally, I argued that “old‐school value investing,” which was successful when the US was much more manufacturing based with physical assets upon which to base value (1050’s-1990’s) is no longer a viable investment approach: 90% of the S&P 500 are companies with intangible assets - software, data, brands, etc. Traditional metrics have given  way to free cash flow, scalability and fungible assets. Really good article on preparing for #QuantumComputing in today's Financial Times by James Manyika, senior vice-president for research, labs, technology and society at GoogleAlphabet. While many observers continue to quip "quantum computing is 30-years away, and has been for the last 30-years", James highlights the significant quantum breakthroughs that have been made this year, especially in areas around quantum algorithms and applications around areas like drug discovery and material science. I think James is spot on with his view that rather than a quantum 'big bang' moment, we'll have more of a continual quantum progression, similar to that seen with AI over the last 10-15 years. James also highlights that there was a 20-fold DECREASE this year in the estimated size of quantum computer needed to break Shur's RSA-2048 algorithm, which means it's going to happen faster than analysts thought, which will have huge implications for post quantum encryption. This is one reason my friends George Hoyem, Gareth Keane and Tom Whiteaker and the team at Silicon Valley Bank have been collaborating on quantum, as we think quantum will be the next computing shift to have a massive impact on innovation, security and work. https://lnkd.in/gWaRKmE2

One way to get better results with LLMs is to grow the training corpus and build larger architectures. Another way that is emerging is to allocate more computation time for inference. In the following paper, the authors propose a novel inference time scaling approach by adapting particle-based Monte Carlo methods -- I really like that idea; partly because it intends to utilize probabilistic modelling for inference, partly because I favor SSMs, and partly because this kind of approach will make it possible to run LLMs locally with decent results.
