“Why are we using a rocket launcher to butter toast?” you might ask... What happens when a perfectly sensible architectural decision quietly drifts out of alignment with reality. A SaaS search engine built for full-text search and clever relevance scoring… being used for glorified key-value lookups. Seventy-five million requests a month. Lots of cost. No edge caching. Target where can I file a request for enhancement on your cash register software. It seems today that when they do a cashier swap at the register and the cashier is in mid order with a customer, if they fail to suspend the order and just logoff they lose that order completely. Store management indicated this was just human error but I think there is a customer experience story here. I would think the cash register software should have some failsafe logic in it so that if I am a cashier in mid order needing to logoff and I do, either the cash register software automatically recognizes there is an order in mid process and the register automatically suspends the order before logout -or- the cash register software at the very least opens a dialogue box that alerts and prompts the cashier that they have an open order in process: would they like to suspend it to logout or cancel the logout process. This would avoid customers needing to wait to have their very large orders rescanned because of the human element. #retail #target #customersuccess Brad Thompson
