💬 PM vs PMM — What I Learned Doing Both I’ve worked as both a Product Manager and a Product Marketing Manager throughout my career. They sound similar — but they think completely differently. Here’s what I learned switching between the two — and how both roles can level up by learning from each other 👇 1️⃣ PMs can learn storytelling from PMMs. PMs are great at defining what to build. PMMs are masters at explaining why it matters. The best PMs I’ve seen don’t just ship features — they shape the story behind them. 2️⃣ PMMs can learn prioritization from PMs. PMs live in tradeoffs and frameworks — they know how to say no. PMMs juggle launches, messaging, enablement, campaigns... a lot. Bringing product-style prioritization to marketing work makes everything sharper. 3️⃣ Both roles need deep customer empathy. PMs talk to users to uncover pain points. PMMs translate that into value. When they collaborate early — not just at launch — the customer wins every time. 4️⃣ The line between PM and PMM is blurring — and that’s a good thing. The future belongs to product communicators — people who can both build the right thing and tell the right story. 💭 One thing I’ve noticed: PMM roles are often more established in physical product companies — but they’re just as critical in digital. That became clear to me when I moved between digital-first orgs to ones that built physical products — the PMM muscle was stronger, and it showed.
