Test your restore process, not your backup process. Every IT provider will tell you your backups are "running." Very few will tell you how long it takes to actually get back to work. If your server dies on a Tuesday morning, do you know if it will take 4 hours or 4 days to restore your files? For most regulated businesses, 4 days of downtime is a catastrophe. We had a great SINET panel earlier today, discussing the top Asset (Exposure! ;-) Management challenges today. I highly appreciate the group - Roy, Rudy, Nitin, Juan, and Troy, who led the session exceptionally well. Some key insights some folks on the panel made that are worth sharing: - "Most incidents today are tied to unknown and unmanaged/undermanaged assets"; "Innovation groups flood the network with new tech—governance lags, so visibility there is absolutely critical." - Top KPIs to measure: critical risk MTTR, time to identify new exposures, and coverage of security controls. - "Dynamic orgs make CMDBs stale overnight; automation is the only shot at knowing what’s out there"
