Last week, I shared my perspective with Mint on growth prospects for mid-tier private hospital chains in India. The healthcare delivery market remains largely fragmented, with top 20 hospital chains holding less than 15% share of the market - offering significant expansion opportunities for large national players as well as regional players. Amidst ongoing consolidation efforts by national chains, a few imperatives for mid-tier chains to stay competitive - a) Continued investment in clinical infrastructure and capabilities - Develop sub-specialty capabilities and investments in state-of-the art equipments b) Need to rethink engagement models - From traditional fee for service, MG + Variable etc. to more ownership linked structures (ESOPs, profit-sharing models etc.) and an environment that fosters collaboration, ownership and retention c) Proactive B2B and B2C initiatives - develop a strong brand across digital and offline channels, positioning the hospital with control over the end-to-end patient journey d) Commitment to clinical quality and operational efficiency tailored to scheme and non-scheme patients As the mid-tier hospitals grow, they will become a vital cog driving expansion of organized healthcare, and in turn, become prominent players for the next wave of consolidation in healthcare. ZS PEER Roundtable: The Future of Patient-Centric Services – Balancing Digital and Human Experience Tanya Shepley, Principal at ZS In late June, my team had the privilege of hosting a spirited virtual roundtable with eight patient services executives from across the pharmaceutical industry. The group shared rich insights on how digital, automation, and AI capabilities are being embedded into patient service models—while maintaining the critical human touch. Here are a few key themes that stood out:   🔹 Hybrid Models are the Future Organizations are increasingly adopting hybrid approaches that blend digital innovation with human-led interactions. While automation enhances efficiency and workflows, human connection in customer-facing roles remains essential. The most effective models often integrate in-house, patient-facing teams with outsourced back-office functions—providing greater control over experience and data.   🔹 Data Integration and Ecosystem Connectivity Remain Hurdles Timely, high-quality data from specialty pharmacies and ecosystem partners is still a challenge. Yet, robust data ownership and analytics are crucial to improving processes and making the case for ongoing investment in best-in-class patient support services.   🔹 AI and Automation are on the Rise—But Strategy Matters Participants are at different stages of AI adoption. Many are leveraging AI to deliver more consistent, tailored patient experiences. However, fewer are using AI to generate deeper patient insights.
