Lots of excitement around Nano Banana (a.k.a Gemini 2.5 Flash Image) and its incredible capabilities. But for me, that's not the real takeaway. ***** Back in January 2024, I worked with Ryan M., Vijay Reddy, Steve Walker, Abhishek B., and Chris Blevins to launch the MVP iteration of Vertex AI's Product Catalogue Enhancement with Gen AI (https://lnkd.in/gmvzU6qK). A feature that would have been a natural fit for the solution was the ability to manipulate product images to generate variations on the base image of the product, but the image generation capabilities at the time were simply not there yet. The number of times, myself, or another PM, or one of the Vertex engineers had to sit down with a customer or a customer facing GCP team, and explain to them what "subject preservation" meant, and why it is a nearly impossible task for a generative model. We told them that they should look for heavily fine tuned, or fully custom small models, with a lot of pre- and post-processing, and even then the model would be retail category specific. ***** And yet here we are: 20 odd months later, and we were totally wrong. Practical subject preservation via prompting and context engineering alone is totally a thing, unlocking an incredible amount of retail merchandising and marketing use cases. ***** This is the real takeaway: Science doesn't evolve linearly, it evolves in sudden bursts and step-changes, what Thomas Kuhn calls a paradigm shift. Their frequency is measured in centuries, and few scientists (whether researchers or practitioners) get to experience one first hand. So if you're an AI or data science person, just pause for a moment. Forget the socio-economics of Gen AI, the FOMO, the aggravating hype and counter-hype, and the overall market madness. Take a minute to observe the real time shift in our understanding of how AI models work happening right before your own eyes, and just how lucky you are to be one of the privileged few to witness an actual scientific paradigm shift in person. #ComputerVision #LLMs #GenAI #Gemini #ScientificMethod #PhilosophyOfScience
