Washington State will begin taxing digital advertising and related ad services starting in 2026, following the passage of ESSB 5814. Digital ads, SEM, online placements, and other marketing services sold to customers with a Washington billing address will be subject to state and local sales tax in some areas, pushing the effective rate close to 10%. This raises advertising costs for Washington-based businesses and may force agencies and advertisers to adjust budgets, pricing, and contract structures.

This is so spot on. It's actually been true for a while -- Google Search of course looked for the same type of organized data. Now, when Google Search is going away, the AI needs the data to reconstitute, remix and otherwise reuse. This is also why the value of verifiable news is going up, not down. Google just got sued by a U.S. Senator for posting a bad AI reply that was not factual. Facts will matter more than ever. News orgs like AP can deliver facts. Despite all these claims about MSM being "fake news" there is nothing like it right now. As Matthew Prince predicted, information that is both fresh and in demand will become more valuable, not less, and even reverse the commoditization of news as news orgs get better and better at ensuring they direct value from their efforts to the highest bidders from AI rather than the those with the biggest bot network.

Large enterprise CMOs are facing a critical challenge: Drive AI transformation while doing right by the teams that built your organization. The C-suite wants AI transformation yesterday. Their teams—many with decades of institutional knowledge—are skeptical, exhausted, or both. Here's what I keep hearing: "I know we need to move fast. But I can't just blow up my team in the process." These leaders aren't stuck because they don't understand AI. They're stuck because they understand people. They need a plan for that first and foremost when the org gets to a certain size. They know that legacy expertise is still valuable and long-tenured employees deserve honesty about what's coming, not false promises. Transformation that breaks trust isn't really transformation—it's just chaos with better tech. This is the real leadership challenge of AI transformation - navigating the human complexity of change in organizations where relationships, tenure, and culture run deep.
