Juan Sequeda started a good thread on #ContextGraphs, which should lead to an interesting conversation. Here's my comment - As to Context Graphs, the Foundation Capital post was very narrow in its scope re: capturing informal decisions from communication and collaboration software (largely unstructured text). Of course, it's just accounting for yet another source of operational information that can support audits, and if ontologically mapped, expands scope of reasoning, learning and adapting. #AI is raising expectations for contextualization and continuous optimization, which is implicitly driving demand for a unified model. Without a common #abstraction across the growing number of incorporated sources this is going to be a discombobulated disaster, alongside the emerging AgenticAI memory models. The problem is that while #GenAI and #AgenticAI co-opt Computer Science and Distributed Systems terms re: #Reflection, #Recursion, #SharedMemory, etc. - they implement them in the most trivial and naive way. The result is that the #DeepLearning crowd, in their drive for "Data uber Alles" is undermining the reasoning, planning and expressive power of the resulting solutions. We need to push back hard to in 2026 to make sure that the Data Scientists "gone wild" don't steam roll us with a foundational, but errant approach.

Here's what I get from it: - big tech companies are literally burning billions on "A.I." without any clear ROI plan - organic "A.I." adoption is abysmally low by their own employees because it simply doesn't work as promised, which is hypocritically embarassing for them, so now they're desperately trying to mandate its usage to prop up their reputational bubble a bit longer - CEOs still don't understand how their own sausage gets made and still don't care about producing quality products that will delight the true customers (the end users) - we have passed "peak A.I." (as all the big tech companies are starting to panic at the realization they have vastly overextended themselves by vastly overinvesting in "A.I.") and are now beginning to coast down the other side of the roller coaster track

Bay Area software engineers have a median total comp of $279K based on recent Levels.fyi data. But after taxes and rent, that number shrinks to $141K. Nearly half the paycheck gone before you've bought groceries. (Assumptions: single filer, standard deduction, no 401k/HSA contributions. Rent data from Zillow Jan 2025.) Following onto my post from yesterday which got a lot of attention, we calculated the after-tax and after-rent takehome for a median Bay Area SWE using Levels.fyi data to see how much these engineers are actually taking home beyond the offer letter numbers. Here's how it breaks down. 1. The federal government takes the biggest cut at $62K, putting you at a 22% effective rate once you account for the standard deduction. 2. California then adds another $22K on top with its 7.9% state income tax, which is one of the highest in the country. 3. Next, FICA chips another $16K off between Social Security and Medicare. Before you've made a single lifestyle choice, you're already down to $180K. Now add housing. The median 1BR in the Bay Area runs about $3,200/month according to Zillow, which translates to roughly $38K per year. After rent, you're looking at $141K in actual disposable income. Even then, your mileage may vary because these numbers include a few assumptions about your tax filing and living situation. This is why it’s important to look beyond the raw TC numbers when evaluating offers. Bay Area compensation is among the highest in the world, but the cost of living is equally high. That doesn’t mean $279K “isn’t a lot.” It still very much is. But geography changes the denominator. A $279K Bay Area offer is not the same economic experience as a $220K offer in a lower-tax, lower-rent market. Once you normalize for taxes and housing, the gap compresses quickly. "Every problem worth owning can be shown on a graph." Been chewing on this line from Stay SaaSy all week. https://lnkd.in/gD9mc4Hw Their argument, Senior anything should own a graph. A metric that moves based on your work. It forces you to pick work that matters and makes the value impossible to argue. What I'd add, You don't need to be senior to own a graph. And you definitely don't need permission. Find a metric that will impact the business and that you can influence. Build the dashboard. Start moving the line. That's how you drive impact, that’s how you improve your career, that’s how you get noticed, that’s how you get promoted. #EngineeringLeadership #CareerGrowth #Metrics
