Five years ago, in August 2020, the world was grappling with the profound impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This monumental global event not only challenged our healthcare systems but also catalyzed a seismic shift in how we perceive work, health, and societal interconnectedness. At the core of this transformation was the rapid acceleration of digital technologies as remote work became the new normal. Companies that were once hesitant about digital transformations had no choice but to adapt swiftly. This had a ripple effect on industries across the board, from tech to education, leading to a proliferation of virtual platforms and tools that we now can't imagine living without. Moreover, the pandemic highlighted and exacerbated existing inequalities, but it also galvanized movements for social change. Business leaders and policymakers were forced to rethink corporate responsibility and the role of business in society. Fast forward to today, and we see that this past disruption has seeded long-term innovations and changes. The hybrid work model has become a mainstay, and there is a renewed emphasis on health and well-being, both physical and mental, in the workplace. In essence, the pandemic has reshaped the economic landscape, placing a premium on adaptability and resilience. As we continue navigating these changes, it is crucial to remember that embracing innovation, embedding sustainability, and ensuring inclusivity are not just responses to crises but essential components for future growth and equitable progress. PARALYZED BY UNCERTAINTY Two decades ago, when I was a partner at a major consulting firm, a senior colleague shared his view that demand for consulting services was lowest during periods of extreme uncertainty. In his estimation: - When times were terrible (in crisis), companies actively engaged us to lead restructuring and cost reduction programs to weather the storm. - When the economy was booming, companies sought our expertise to develop growth strategies, redesign and refocus innovation plans, and explore M&A opportunities. - But during uncertain times—when companies were “muddling along” close to plan but with concerns about the future—that's when they cut discretionary spending and slowed hiring, aiming to “ride it out” until conditions improved or at least became more predictable. This last scenario seems analogous to what we are experiencing right now. Although employment remains strong, and consumer spending is mostly holding up, the future feels uncertain and unpredictable - and the business leaders I interact with are clearly concerned. It will be interesting to see how this cycle plays out, but I worry that a pervasive sense of uncertainty and hesitation amongst business leaders will have a negative long-term impact as executive teams react by cutting back on spending, hiring, and investments. 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 Over nearly three decades, I’ve worked at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and innovation—from building ventures in Silicon Valley to advising sovereigns and corporations in the Gulf. Today, no technology has sparked as much debate in healthcare boardrooms and ministries as artificial intelligence, especially large language models (LLMs). The familiar phrase goes: “𝑨𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑨𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕.” True, but incomplete. The real divide is not between humans and machines. It’s between those who integrate AI responsibly and those who either resist or deploy it carelessly. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐈𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 * Diagnostics & triage: LLMs can analyze unstructured medical notes, imaging reports, and lab results to flag risks earlier than traditional systems. * Clinical decision support: AI “co-pilots” can suggest differential diagnoses, recommend treatment plans, and even predict complications. * Workflow efficiency: Automating reporting, discharge summaries, and administrative tasks is reducing clinician burnout, which is a global crisis. * Patient communication: Tools can translate medical jargon into plain language or bridge linguistic divides, enhancing patient literacy and engagement. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬 Yet, the risks are as real as the opportunities: * LLMs are prone to hallucinations—confidently producing factually incorrect or even harmful content. * Biases in training data can lead to inequitable care, disproportionately harming vulnerable groups. * Lack of transparency erodes clinicians’ ability to justify decisions, threatening patient trust. As Haltaufderheide & Ranisch (2024, npj Digital Medicine) note, the real question is not whether we adopt LLMs but what constitutes acceptable human oversight. 𝐊𝐒𝐀 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 has placed AI at the core of healthcare transformation. Projects like SEHA Virtual Hospital and investments into AI-enabled infrastructure illustrate the ambition. But ambition must be paired with safeguards. Blind adoption risks eroding trust; outright rejection risks stagnation. The right path is collaboration: human judgment guides machine intelligence, and machine intelligence amplifies human capability. He invited the legendary GE CEO Jack Welch to speak at MIT Sloan School of Management and a protestor came into the lecture hall with a fuming bucket and placed it right in front. Manny Maceda didn't think twice before running down and grabbing that bucket and taking it outside. Weeks later, he would find himself having lunch in the private dining room of one of the most renowned CEOs in America, who was courting him to join his company. In this episode, I sit down with Manny Maceda, the first Asian and Filipino American Worldwide Managing Partner and CEO of Bain & Company, and now Chair of the firm. Bain is one of the biggest management consulting firms in the world. Manny’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and leadership across cultures. Born in Boston and raised in the Philippines under a dictatorship, Manny’s family fled to the U.S. after his father, then a senator, was forced into exile. What began as a visit to see his father turned into a lifelong journey in America that led him from Illinois Tech to MIT and, eventually, a 37-year career at Bain. We talk about how his early experiences shaped his empathy and adaptability, his path from a young immigrant engineer to the first Asian leader of Bain, and how he’s helped transform the company into a $6 billion global firm while keeping its culture of mentorship, diversity, and purpose at the core.
