🔍 How to Add Non-functional Requirements for a Fintech App At NASO, we say: “A brilliant feature means nothing if it crashes under pressure or violates compliance.” Here’s how I coach BAs in our masterclass to define non-functional requirements (NFRs) that truly matter in fintech. 💡 What Are NFRs? They describe how a system performs, not what it does. Key categories: Performance, Security, Usability, Availability, Scalability, Maintainability, Auditability, Compliance. In fintech, these are mission-critical, not optional. 🧩 Define NFRs Like a Senior BA 🔸 Start from Risk & Trust Ask: “What would break your trust in this system?” You’ll discover key expectations—like uptime guarantees, encryption, or speed under load. 🔸 Understand Compliance Drivers Fintech apps must meet strict standards: PCI-DSS – Payment data security GDPR – Data privacy SOC 2 – Cloud security Local banking laws These shape many NFRs around access, audit, and retention. 🔸 Involve Architects & DevOps Early Architects inform scalability & performance. DevOps ensures uptime, monitoring, rollbacks, SLAs are enforceable—not just wishful thinking. 🔸 Break Down NFRs by Area Security: 2FA, RBAC, AES-256 encryption Performance: Response time < 2s with 1,000+ users Availability: 99.95% uptime, auto-failover Scalability: Auto-scale under peak load Usability: Transfers in ≤ 3 steps Maintainability: Modular design, API docs, error logging Compliance: Explicit standards (GDPR, PCI-DSS, etc.) ✍️ Write Measurable NFRs NFRs should be: ✔️ Specific – Avoid vague terms like “secure” ✔️ Measurable – Add metrics (e.g. “AES-256”, “< 2s”) ✔️ Testable – If QA can’t test it, rewrite it 📌 Examples: ✅ "Encrypt financial data with AES-256 in transit and at rest.” ✅ "Maintain ≥ 99.95% uptime annually." ✅ "Complete fund transfer in ≤ 3 steps." ✅ "Comply with GDPR and PCI-DSS." 🧠 Always tie NFRs to business value.
