Leading K-12 digital strategy in a very large district offers a unique vantage point. It's about orchestrating innovation to truly impact learning at scale, beyond just technology. A key insight from my leadership at Wake County Public Schools: the critical importance of proactive, human-centered technology adoption. This is especially true with emerging areas like AI, where thoughtful strategy ensures tools genuinely empower learning, rather than just adding complexity. As a wise leader once told me, “support should feel like support.” Real transformation means technology aligns with pedagogical goals and empowers educators, not overwhelms them. For example, a strategic decision to create customizable, accessible resources for teachers – like readily available templates in Canvas or Blueprint courses – significantly boosted teacher efficacy and student engagement. These supports were job-embedded, relevant, and aligned to district goals, empowering teachers to personalize learning without reinventing the wheel. Navigating complex budgets, diverse stakeholder needs, and rapid tech shifts – including the strategic integration of AI – now deeply informs my work. As a consultant, I collaborate with districts nationwide, applying these lessons to help them make informed, strategic EdTech decisions and drive digital transformation. It's about translating vision into actionable, sustainable strategies that truly serve students and staff.
