Rain, the enterprise-grade infrastructure for stablecoin-powered payments, led by Farooq M. and Charles Yoo-Naut, has secured a $250 million Series C funding round led by ICONIQ, with participation from Sapphire Ventures, Dragonfly, Bessemer Venture Partners, Galaxy Ventures, FirstMark, Lightspeed, Norwest, and Endeavor, bringing the total funding to $338 million and valuing the company at $1.95 Billion. I think we should stop talking about stablecoin payment 'rails'. It makes it sound like there's a complicated multi-layer system of services and compliance (like ACH & SWIFT) beyond the reach of mere mortals, that we need giants like Mastercard or Visa to help us navigate, when in truth stablecoin rails are just... a public blockchain. Once we've got our collective heads around this, we can stop letting the incumbents determine the payments narrative, thank them for rubber-stamping the use of stablecoins for payments, and start using them ourselves without their 'help'. Native stablecoin payments are more secure (notice that card-payments require you sharing your 16 digit password with everyone you want to pay), faster (no middlemen taking custody, and earning interest for a few days before it settles), safer (buyer protection can get baked in to blockchain transactions because they permit programmable money) and therefore... cheaper! Mesh's CEO and Co-Founder Bam Azizi was featured in PYMNTS today discussing the future of stablecoin payments! 🚀 At Stablecon in NYC, he had the opportunity to share Mesh's vision with Austin Prey from the #PYMNTS team: "People hold their assets in crypto, but 'pay with bitcoin' is so 2019. Merchants don't want to accept it, they want to accept stablecoins." The reality? We're sitting on a $3 trillion crypto market, but stablecoins represent less than 10% of that.
