More animation equals better experience, right? Not always. My mom tried using a site I designed. Buttons had wild hover effects. Pages flipped like book pages. She got mad because nothing stayed still long enough to click. That's when I learned the difference. Microanimations should be helpers, not performers. Good ones: - Respond to user actions - Show loading and processing states - Direct attention subtly - Make delays feel shorter Poor microanimations: - Dance around for no reason - Block you from your actual goal - Add unnecessary delays - Make people dizzy Your goal isn't to wow other designers. A simple way to make your Intellum Evolve pages feel more dynamic. Clients often ask for GIFs or small animations in the Evolve courses I build, but the file sizes can be huge, and the quality isn’t great. Someone on the Evolve forum pointed me towards some animated SVG software, but it wasn’t available in Hong Kong where I’m based. That’s when I came across SVGator. It lets me create clean, lightweight animated SVGs that drop straight into Evolve. The file sizes are tiny, and everything stays crisp. I’ve put together a quick, detective noir-style proof of concept with some subtle animations to bring in a little atmosphere. Another thing I tried was adding an animated SVG to the hover state of an action button. When the learner moves the cursor over it, the animation kicks in, adding to the overall tone and style of the concept. The button doesn’t go anywhere; it’s just part of the landing page for the demo, but it shows how the effect could work inside a real course. This would also work with other components that support hover-state images, such as the infographic component. Check it out in the attached video or try the example yourself using the link in the comments. SVGator has a free plan if you want to experiment, though you’ll need a paid plan to export without watermarks. I've only optimised for laptop/desktop at the moment but as this is Evolve, I could get it working nicely on tablet and mobile as well. If you’re building with Intellum Evolve and want cleaner visuals with tiny file sizes, animated SVGs are definitely worth exploring. #LearningAndDevelopment #eLearning #DigitalLearning
