One small change on a website can dramatically increase signups. I was recently looking at the Boise Art Museum website and noticed something interesting. Like many sites, it had a simple email signup that essentially said: “Stay informed.” The challenge with messaging like this is that it requires the visitor to already care about the museum. Many people might not yet see the value in signing up. But imagine if the signup instead offered something like this: “Learn the top 5 most famous artists who have ever lived in Idaho.” Now that is compelling. Even someone who is only casually interested in art might think: “Wait, who are the most famous artists from Idaho?” That curiosity becomes the motivation to sign up. This is a powerful concept for any website. Instead of asking people to subscribe for updates, offer something adjacent that sparks curiosity or provides value. A while back I asked my cartographer colleagues about the calculus that goes into choosing typeface and symbology point size in this post https://lnkd.in/gAistzPd. Adding to the great insights and suggestions shared with me, I recently stumbled onto the Esri #ArcGIS Blog post "Guidelines for minimum size for text and symbols on maps" by Aileen Buckley. I'm sharing here because she does a great job of explaining the "why" behind what seems to be (for me) a task of trial and error, aka printing lists of fonts of various sizes and taping them to a wall. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gfHNwskd Hint: the rule of thumb is an actual rule! The width of your thumb, and therefore a human's visual angle, is 2 degrees. Another great nugget: "A general rule that cartographers use is called the “Rule of 32” – which states that at 32 feet (10 m), type should be at least one inch high to be legible." Oh, and this one: "The general idea is that the minimum sizes for symbols are about two thirds of the recommended text sizes." Thank you, Aileen!
