Fall 2025 higher ed enrollment trends point to a complex recovery and not the enrollment cliff that was predicted. Key take-aways: - Across sample systems providing early data, overall enrollments are showing +2 % to +6 % year-over-year growth in Fall 2025. - Stronger growth among freshman cohorts, especially in public flagship and land-grant institutions, pulling ahead of regional institutions. - Dual-enrollment and non-degree undergraduate pipelines appear to be a meaningful driver of head-count gains. However, as these programs scale, instructional design and faculty support teams are pressed too thin. Institutions can support them by providing robust resources, professional development, and opportunities for collaboration, while also ensuring they are included in key decision-making processes. This includes access to the training, tools, and technology needed to scale effectively and work efficiently. Without scalable systems of support, faculty and designers face bottlenecks, delays, and inconsistent student experiences. Institutions must streamline course creation, strengthen collaboration, and protect space for creativity—without sacrificing quality or flexibility. Stop building AI features. Start onboarding AI teammates. Most edtech companies today are busy building tactical AI features—to accelerate content development, expand automated scoring, or offer chatbots to users. Useful, yes. But they deliver incremental operational benefits and only temporary competitive differentiation. In my work with Faculty—Europe’s largest applied AI company—I’ve seen a transformational approach maturing in other sectors, like finance, insurance, and pharma. These industries have moved well beyond AI features to deploy and scale AI agents. The differences are profound: > Features respond. Agents act. > Features add convenience. Agents deliver outcomes. > Features are invisible tools. Agents are accountable teammates. The businesses that are reaping the benefits didn’t bolt on AI features. They onboarded AI agents just like new hires: defining the job, providing resources and guardrails, assessing performance and providing feedback, and expanding autonomy as trust and results grew. The results? Agents delivering step-change operational and competitive gains in highly regulated, high-stakes industries.
