Last week I delivered a 30-minute webinar on building the necessary change muscle to deliver on enterprise transformation (link to replay in comments). One of my builds in the deck aligns Prosci's role-based programs to a generic transformation lifecycle - Align, Architect, Activate. Sequence and scope matter, especially when we're mobilizing support and action across the organization for transformation. I keep coming back to this line from Extraordinarily Badass Agile Coaching: “The first and perhaps most important element of the agile coaching mindset is whether you view yourself in service of and to your clients.” It sounds simple—almost obvious. But in practice, it’s anything but. Especially when you work as a consultant, it’s easy to get caught in the tug-of-war between: ✅ What’s best for your client right now ✅ What’s best for your firm, your metrics, or your next contract This is where you have to get clear with yourself: Am I here to look good, or to be of service? Real impact happens when you put the client first. Not your ego. Not your sales targets. Not your slide decks. Serve the client. Support their growth. Protect their focus. Buzzword Central: Now the Product Operating Model? First it was Lean Six Sigma—where forms even documented the measurable $M in cost savings. Then came Agile—suddenly Lean was “dead,” and development became a free-for-all waste frenzy. Scrum, Flow, P2P, VSM... Thankfully, Kanban is becoming more mainstream (finally - please just add the wait states!). And now? Product is making a comeback—with the Product Operating Model as the next big wave. It’s slicker, more marketable, riding the momentum of platform thinking, stronger tech, and yes—even SAFe (love it or hate it) for the change management muscle it built inside big enterprises. But here’s the catch: Language alone won’t save you. Naming a Product Owner without empowering them? Using tools to manage chaos instead of reduce it? Calling it “product” but managing it like a project? 📉 The result? More noise. Less focus. Slower delivery. After 25 years helping large orgs transform for real, we’ve seen the patterns—and the missteps. 🧭 In this post, I break down the 10 non-negotiable principles of a real product model—and the common traps that derail it. Why Retrospectives Fall Flat — and How to Fix Them Most teams do retros.... But TOO MANY teams miss getting actual VALUE from them. Here’s the truth no one tells you: Having a retrospective does NOT make your team better. You're not magically better by going through the motions of a framework! Retros won't just work because you put one on the calendar and most of the team shows up!! They work when your team feels SAFE enough to be BRUTALLY HONEST about what is and isn’t working— AND when they sincerely care enough to bring solutions to the table to FIX what isn't working, knowing their ideas will actually be HEARD and maybe not always, but that sometimes those ideas will be tried! If you NEVER implement ideas from your team, your team will stop giving you them — they will check out. And so, that means SOMETIMES, you’ll need to try something you might think will NOT work (or maybe you're "confident" it won't work)... you STILL have to try it! You may discover it actually helps! AND you just empowered your team to continue thinking of possible solutions. NOT every idea is going to work, but you need to be willing to experiment. If your retros feel like time-wasters or “just another meeting,” here’s what might be missing: It’s not safe. If the retro notes are public for anyone to view, people will fear backlash and they won’t share honest feedback. Psychological safety is non-negotiable. It’s not productive. Without clear team-agreed guidelines for how to identify problems and solve them, the retro turns into a venting session — and NOBODY looks forward to that! There’s no impact. If the same issues come up every sprint, and nothing changes, it’s not a retro — it’s wasted time and a good warning sign that something needs to be different. It’s WAY too repetitive. Humans need variety. If every retro looks and feels the same, people check out. SO… switch it up. Ask different questions. Meet somewhere different. Meet outdoors! Try new formats. Creativity needs oxygen and your team will enjoy it so much more! It’s too much. You don’t need 19 action items. (Remember your MAIN goal is building excellent software to solve the client’s problems.). So, choose one thing the team agrees will make a difference — and commit to trying that ONE thing the next sprint. Then, be sure to start your next retro with how that experiment went! Retros are the most powerful of ceremonies in Agile — but only when your team feels safe enough to be honest, and empowered enough to improve. As an experienced Agile Project Manager, I have found that effective leadership is crucial to the success of Agile teams. In this article, we will explore the key principles of Agile leadership, as well as the popular Scrum framework and other project management methodologies that can be integrated with Agile practices. One of the fundamental components of Agile leadership is creating a culture of trust, transparency, and empowerment within the team. This involves fostering open communication, encouraging self-organization, and supporting team members in making decisions autonomously. By empowering team members to take ownership of their work and providing them with the resources and guidance they need to succeed, Agile leaders can create a collaborative and innovative environment where individuals are motivated to deliver high-quality results. In addition to building a strong team culture, Agile leaders must also be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and priorities. This requires a flexible and responsive mindset, as well as the ability to effectively manage risk and uncertainty. By embracing change and continuously refining their approach based on feedback and lessons learned, Agile leaders can position their teams for success in complex and unpredictable environments. One of the most widely used frameworks within Agile project management is Scrum, which is based on an iterative and incremental approach to product development. Scrum is organized around short, time-boxed iterations known as sprints, during which cross-functional teams collaborate to deliver a potentially shippable product increment. The Scrum framework includes roles such as the Scrum Master, who is responsible for facilitating the Scrum process, and the Product Owner, who represents the stakeholders and prioritizes the backlog. By following the principles of Scrum, teams can improve communication, increase transparency, and deliver value to customers more efficiently. While Scrum is a popular choice for many Agile teams, there are other project management frameworks that can also be integrated with Agile practices, such as Kanban, Lean, and Extreme Programming
