As autonomous technologies continue to evolve, a lack of transparency could become a significant hurdle for consumer acceptance. Tesla could benefit from adopting a more open approach like Waymo, assuring users that safety is a top priority.</p><p>Moreover, the competitive landscape is intensifying as more companies venture into the realm of self-driving cars. It’s imperative for the industry as a whole to embrace a culture of transparency. Companies such as Rivian and Zoox, alongside established players, need to consider independent audits as a means to foster public confidence. 🚗 The Patterns We See That Autonomous Vehicles Don’t (Yet) Real-world autonomy doesn’t just need fast reaction times, It needs something subtler, the system’s internal understanding has to stay consistent with what’s actually happening in the environment. 🎥 The Setup I replicated a real highway clip as accurately as possible and ran one of the initial iterations of the L3 AV stack I built, which lacks contextual inference. (The scenario isn’t an exact pixel-level replication, it is designed purely to compare human pattern-based reasoning with the AV stack’s decision logic.) Video layout: Top: Raw dash-cam feed Bottom row (the AV stack’s POV): • Left: Perception overlay (what the system “sees”) • Center: maneuver visualization (What the AV decides, plans and reacts) • Right: Trajectory plot (ego + actors + ego's past/future path) 🧠 The Reasoning Difference • Human driver (intuition + pattern recognition): The left lane looked faster, but the driver sensed something subtle, a long chain of tightly packed vehicles , usually means a hidden slowdown ripple. So they held the center lane more open space, lower risk, fewer surprises. We subconsciously evaluate patterns, comfort, and “how this will play out”. (The reasoning described here is a hypothesis. Decisions and reasoning varies person to person, But patterns like traffic density, speed, other drivers behavior and other cars trajectory are things we evaluate subconsciously, We try to take calculated risks) • AV stack (object-by-object logic): The system treated each car as an isolated object, not a pattern. Left lane vehicles were moving slightly faster, so the AV predicted better progress and attempted a lane-change. Technically correct, but context-blind, no understanding of congestion dynamics. 💡 What This Shows This isn’t about blaming the AV or praising the human. It’s a glimpse into the gap between pattern recognition and true anticipation. We’re good at reading subtle patterns like traffic density, traffic rhythm, how “trapped” a lane feels. Most AV stacks are still very good at local optimization and very early at contextual understanding. ❓Question for You Which is harder for an AV to learn, predicting what others will do or understanding why they might do it? Should we incorporate psychological priors (driver styles, risk tolerance), or is that too unpredictable for safety? Waymo Vehicles Have Arrived On NYC Streets! https://lnkd.in/giXXNHnm I wrote a column for amNY Law examining the policy and regulatory landscape for robotaxis and autonomous vehicles in New York City! Read an excerpt below: Waymo’s recent expansion into New York City is making headlines, stirring a mix of curiosity and speculation in the taxicab, for-hire vehicle, and ride-hail industries.   While some are wondering what this means, how it will work and how it will affect them, the answer is quite simple: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) will save lives, create jobs, reduce congestion, and provide significant support for Vision Zero efforts to eliminate traffic injuries and fatalities. It is a game changer, and New York State and City must catch up with the more than 25 U.S. states enabling this technology to operate on public roads.   For now, Waymo’s NYC operations will involve human drivers behind the wheel with no paying passengers. This is not the same, full-blown autonomy that Waymo provides elsewhere, including San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, and Atlanta. It is a data-gathering and simulation exercise that is an essential first step before the company can consider launching robotaxi service. It will take time before passengers can ride in driverless cars, as a recent bill to fully deploy Waymo in New York did not pass.   New York’s AV regulatory framework is defined by tight local control and state-level inertia. The state allows companies to obtain a permit from the DMV to test AVs on public roads with human safety drivers. At the same time, to test in NYC, companies must obtain approval from the NYC Department of Transportation. Even with state and local approval, Waymo cannot launch commercial robotaxi services in the five boroughs without approval from the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission to operate as taxis or rideshare vehicles. However, there is no legal pathway to such approval nor a plan to create one. The launch of AVs in NYC remains uncertain, whether as taxicabs, a high-volume service like Uber and Lyft, or leasing the vehicles to existing companies and taxi medallion owners. While other states like California and Florida have authorized commercial AV operations, New York lacks a clear legal framework for this. The ask of a remote operator is to provide guidance to the vehicle, not to man the. Vehicle itself. A previous client introduced us to remote operations and I understood quickly that the term can be confusing. Waymo however should’ve been prepared to answer this question and for other robotaxis out there using remote operators, pay attention. This is now a para crisis.

A major shift in autonomous driving technology just dropped. Waymo’s partnership with Toyota isn’t just another AV headline—it’s a redefinition of how autonomy scales. Yesterday’s Waymo–Toyota announcement (https://lnkd.in/gs9SEKry) marks a pivotal moment: for the first time, we’re seeing product-level thinking applied to the deeply complex architecture of self-driving systems. Why this matters: Until now, autonomy has mostly been built like a bespoke project—cobbling together a matrix of hardware suppliers, ADAS vendors, path planners, and mapping platforms. That process is slow, costly, and fragile. But Waymo is changing the game. Their stack is now quality-assured, tightly integrated, and exposes APIs directly to vehicle systems. This is autonomy as a product, not a project. My predictions: - Tesla will release its autonomy stack to market—Musk is a software strategist, and this move would align - Tier 1's and component vendors will consolidate to form full-stack offerings (Bosch + TomTom? Qualcomm + HERE?). - Vertical integration will rise despite its risks—because it enables scale, quality, and safety. This is an inflection point for the SDV ecosystem. Waymo just played a bold move that others will have no choice but to answer. PS: For over a decade, I worked in the mapping, navigation, and software-defined vehicle (SDV) space across two industry pioneers: HERE Technologies and TomTom. These roles gave me a front-row seat to the evolution of in-vehicle software and the complexity of integrating autonomous systems.

Autonomous Vehicle economy is a critical juncture. There are only two leading companies in USA: Waymo and Tesla . Both are in a scale mode. If anyone is trying in labs and delay the production release, they will not be able stand against these giants. While the approach of waymo and Tesla for AV appears to be different, I believe both will survive. It’s different from previous technology competing for supremacy : blueray vs HD dvd or VHS vs DVD or also Uber vs Lyft, the delivery of the service is transportation and that doesn’t require user to change anything drastically.

We’ve entered the era of data — and cars are mobile sensing platforms. Smart vehicles don’t just prevent accidents — they generate safety insights. The EU should mandate anonymized, standardized data sharing across OEMs to build public, evidence-based road safety metrics. Private data shouldn’t gatekeep public safety.
