Add sections to your profile with screen reader support

Last updated: 2 years ago

Your LinkedIn profile is not limited to the sections that are there by default. This topic tells you how to use a screen reader to add some recommended sections to your profile. We have tested the topic with JAWS, Narrator, NVDA in Microsoft Edge, VoiceOver, the built-in iOS screen reader, and TalkBack, the built-in Android screen reader which adheres to common accessibility standards and techniques. Different screen readers and web browsers might behave differently.

Important to know

You must be signed in to your LinkedIn account.

To add sections to your profile with screen reader support:

  1. To open the Me menu on the LinkedIn homepage, press the Tab key until you hear “Me button, collapsed,” and then press Enter.

  2. To open your profile, press the Tab key until you hear “View Profile,” and then press Enter. Your profile page opens.

  3. To start adding a new section, press the Tab key until you hear “Add profile section button,” and then press Enter.

  4. To go to the Recommended category, press the Tab key until you hear “Recommended button,” and then press Spacebar to expand the category.

  5. To browse the list of recommended sections, press the Tab key to move forward or Shift+Tab to move backwards. When you find a section you want to add, such as Add licenses & certifications or Add courses, press Enter. The corresponding pop-up window opens.

Note: The Add featured option takes you to a different window, and is not covered in this example, and the Add recommendations option is discussed in a separate article.

  6. Press the Tab key to move from field to field and fill in all required fields. You can also fill in any optional fields you want. Your screen reader announces required fields by saying “Asterisk” or “Star” after the field name.

  7. Some text fields have suggestions offered by LinkedIn. You can just start typing the item, and LinkedIn offers you suggestions matching what you typed. Your screen reader announces how many suggestions there are. Use the Down and Up arrow keys to browse the suggestions, and then press Enter to select one.

  8. Some fields have a dropdown menu listing the available options. Use the Down and Up arrow keys to browse the options until you find the one you want.

  9. Some fields are simply a checkbox you can select or clear. Press Spacebar to toggle between the two.

  10. Some fields require you to define the start and end date. To set the start date, press the Tab key until you hear “Start date, month” (with Narrator and NVDA) or “Month” (with JAWS), and then select the right month with the Down and Up arrow keys. To select the start year, press the Tab key once, and then select the right year with the Down and Up arrow keys.

  11. To set the end date, press the Tab key once, and then select the right month with the Down and Up arrow keys. To select the end year, press the Tab key once, and then select the right year with the Down and Up arrow keys.

  12. To save the new section, press the Tab key until you hear “Save button,” and then press Enter.

The focus returns to your profile page.
