Age discrimination in job posts

Last updated: 3 years ago

LinkedIn prohibits discrimination in job posts based on protected characteristics.

LinkedIn’s job posts policies don’t allow age requirements or preferences in job posts, unless required by law. If age requirements do apply, be sure to include the law or regulation in your job post. In the U.S. and many other jurisdictions, age discrimination in employment is unlawful.

Below are some phrase examples that may result in your job posting being removed from LinkedIn:

  • “Candidates must be at least 40 years old.”

  • “Candidates must be less than 40 years old.”

  • “Candidates between the ages of 25 and 35 preferred.”

  • “Looking to hire a young Business Development Manager.”

Instead, focus on an applicant’s skills or level of experience. Here are a few examples:

  • “Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience in cybersecurity.”

  • “The job requires that candidates lift objects over 50 pounds.”

  • “This role is open to new college graduates.”

Here's a tip

Phrasing is directed toward the job requirements, not the applicant’s personal traits or characteristics. Be mindful of searching based on information that may be closely related to age. For example, filtering profiles based on year of graduation could have a disproportionate impact on older (or younger) workers.
