  • At Oklahoma Human Services, we know the most meaningful improvements come from listening to those with lived experience. Through the Youth Advisory Board, individuals who have experienced foster care are helping shape policy, strengthen services, and improve outcomes for youth across Oklahoma. Their insight is informing priorities like supporting successful transitions into adulthood and maintaining critical family connections. This work reflects an ongoing commitment to building a more responsive and effective child welfare system, guided by the voices of those it serves. The Youth Advisory Board is currently seeking additional members (ages 16–23) with foster care experience. Those interested in getting involved can contact the Oklahoma Successful Adulthood Program at 1-800-397-2945. A recent feature from FOX 23 News includes perspectives from Youth Advisory Board members Michalann Clark and Elijah Counts, highlighting both the impact of this work and the voices behind it: https://lnkd.in/gtCRHNhi

  • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the people and partnerships working every day to help children grow up in safe, supportive environments. At the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, prevention happens through the dedication of child welfare professionals, foster and kinship caregivers, and community partners across Oklahoma who work together to strengthen families and support children. This month, we recognize and thank the staff and partners whose daily work helps make prevention possible. Your service helps build stronger families, stronger communities, and brighter futures for Oklahoma’s children. We are grateful for everyone who plays a role in supporting children and families across our state.

Strong families are the foundation of strong communities, and that is why this work matters for Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth, in partnership with the Oklahoma State Department of Health and Oklahoma Department of Human Services, recently convened partners from across the state for the Strengthening Families Together Collaborative. The convening focused on strengthening prevention efforts, supporting a trauma-informed workforce and advancing community-based solutions that help children and families thrive. Participants engaged in cross-sector collaboration and shared strategies to better align services and supports across Oklahoma. By working together, Oklahoma is building a more coordinated, prevention-focused system that supports families early and effectively, leading to safer children, stronger communities and a better future for our state. A special thanks to Dr. Christopher (Chris) Culver for his keynote presentation, “Be the Light,” and for highlighting the impact of kindness, connection and intentional leadership in strengthening communities. #StrengtheningFamilies | #childabuseprevention | #OklahomaKids | #Oklahoma

  • Last week, Oklahoma Human Services joined partners, advocates, and families at the Capitol for Developmental Disabilities Day, an event focused on amplifying the voices of disabled Oklahomans and building greater awareness and understanding across our state. The event provided opportunities for attendees to engage directly with legislators, hear from Senator Julia Kirt, Representative Ellyn Novak Hefner, ChSNC, Representative Nicole Miller, Representative John Pfeiffer, DDS Division Director, Beth Scrutchins, and Disabilities Day Committee volunteers, and connect with organizations from across the state during a vendor fair focused on advancing services and support. • Oklahoma is proud to lead nationally as the first state to join “A Home for Every Child,” an initiative led by the U.S. Administration for Children and Families focused on ensuring every child has access to a safe and stable home. During last week’s kickoff event, Oklahoma Human Services brought together community partners to outline how the state will expand foster home capacity, strengthen prevention efforts and support families before children enter care. The event also marked the launch of OKDHS’ first Youth Advisory Board, creating a formal pathway for young people with lived experience in foster care to help inform and improve child welfare services. The need is significant: • Nationwide, only 57 licensed foster homes exist for every 100 children entering care • Nearly 6,000 children are currently in Oklahoma’s foster care system • More than 500 additional foster homes are needed statewide This initiative focuses on expanding foster home capacity, strengthening prevention efforts and building systems where homes are ready when children need them. We extend our appreciation to the community partners and professionals working alongside us to advance this effort, and to our panel speakers for lending their voices and expertise to this important conversation.
