Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest energy provider, uses data to run a 1.8 GW virtual power plant made up of electric vehicles, deciding when to charge and discharge for cheaper power and a more stable grid. Operating across eight countries, the team brings data from across the business onto Databricks, ingesting more than 10 trillion rows last year, with Unity Catalog supporting secure access for thousands of users. Most teams rely on shared staging databases or slow pg_dump copies that drift from production and make testing unreliable.
