A patient with sickle cell disease recently had the chance to meet the scientist whose discovery helped change his life -- the doctor behind the gene therapy treatment he received. Moments like this are why it was such an honor to host Nobel laureate Dr. Jennifer Doudna as our guest lecturer for this year’s Annual Allistair Abraham, MD, Endowed Lecture. Dr. Doudna shared insights into the groundbreaking impact of CRISPR gene editing and what gene and cell therapy could mean for the future of sickle cell treatment. Seeing scientific discovery come full circle, from the lab to the patient, was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when innovation and care come together.

Last month, our experts joined colleagues from across the region for the 2026 Behavioral Health Symposium hosted by the Child-and-Adolescent Psychiatric Society of Greater Washington, to share expertise and strengthen family-centered approaches to complex care. Collaboration like this is essential to improving outcomes for children and conversations like these move the field forward, helping children and families receive thoughtful, coordinated care when they need it most. cc: Adelaide Robb Jennifer Dorr, DO, MPH Justine Larson Sivabalaji Kaliamurthy

Last week, our Children's High-Risk Pathogen Team proudly represented Children’s National Hospital at the Preparedness Summit in Baltimore. As leaders in developing pediatric high-risk pathogen care, representatives from Emergency Management and Child Life Specialist built partnerships and discussed practical strategies to address vulnerabilities in our health security system regarding special pathogen scenarios. Our team’s focus is to support patients coping during special pathogen events and are proud that Children’s National is a lead in developing emergency care plans for our patients. We appreciate their ongoing commitment to collaboration, preparedness and protecting the communities we serve.
