Unfortunately, the focus for professionals in security testing has been mostly on leveraging automated tools that can simplify the detection and reporting efforts. However , many a times these tools don't go deep or have capability to identify security issues related to business logics, application integrations or other modern application ecosystem flaws. Security folks should have the ability to understand the architecture of the ecosystem, the integrations, threats and vulnerabilities. After this combination of both manual and automated tools should be leveraged to find security flaws across SDLC.

In today's cyber landscape, where threats evolve rapidly, a comprehensive testing strategy is non-negotiable. Choose the right mix of testing methods based on your project's specific needs and constraints. Strong input validation may still make the SQLi unexploitable. Implementing defense in depth goes a long way and hackers will hate you for it.

When I test a web application from an external perspective, this is the first place I look. There are various tools that can automatically scan outward facing code for references to technologies that are in use. From a red team perspective, this is called the “discovery” stage of an attack. Attackers will build their entire strategy, or most of it, based on what they discover here. In addition to rigorously and regularly updating the softwares in use, it’s a good idea to obfuscate them in outward facing code so that the software and/or the version cannot be easily determined. Generally speaking, you want to write your outward facing code to reveal as little as possible to potential attackers.
