How do you handle performance issues and bugs in production?

Diagnose, Resolve, Enhance! 🔍🚀 I'd tackle performance issues and bugs in production by initially identifying the root cause through thorough analysis and diagnostic tools. Implement a solution by applying patches or code fixes. Carefully deploy and verify the solution in the production environment, ensuring it effectively resolves the issue without introducing new problems. Finally, extract lessons from the experience to prevent future issues, incorporating them into the development and testing processes.

Recently I ascertained a system imbalance that threatened to disrupt supply. My first step is always to seek insight from those on the front line. With their experience in mind I can populate possible solutions and build knowledge in support of them. I share this information up the administration pipeline in order to position their department heads as active listeners and team players. Then they follow through with the strongest recommendation while experiencing full support, gratitude, and a sense of team support. This is in my role as a school administrator, not my favorite aspect of the job.

Use logs, monitoring tools, and profiling tools like OpenTelemetry to identify the root cause of performance issues and bugs. Implement automated integration tests and manual testing to detect potential issues early in the development cycle. Deploy fixes incrementally without breaking other functions, ensuring minimal disruption. Reverify the entire system after deployment to confirm the fix is effective. Always prioritize a thorough rollback plan to quickly revert changes if the fix causes unforeseen issues.

Problem: bottleneck in production - loss revenue. We review the current SOP and workflow to see if it is being followed, communicated with the team to review how they interpreted this process. There were lack of inefficiencies in communication channels. We revised and enhanced current system Created a cohesive alignment with supervisors and line staff to increase communication and collaboration. Increased staff force to support this current system Shifted responsibilities and increase self reporting communication. Ensured this is communication to the managing team to weekly on any gaps not being discussed between the line staff and supervisors. Continuously monitor this process to see if it is being effective to increase revenue

Tracking the issue back to its source requires examining code changes, system logs, and user reports. Once identified, I prioritize the issue based on its impact and complexity. Quick fixes might be implemented for immediate relief, while more complex problems require careful planning and testing before deployment. Constant monitoring post-fix ensures the issue is resolved without introducing new problems. This systematic approach minimizes downtime and maintains system stability.

Implementing a fix often involves reproducing the issue, experimenting with fixes and deploying the fix in production. In my experience, this usually takes away resources and cycles away from several Engineering teams. For a global outage, it makes sense to involve different teams but not in the case which only impact certain customers and users. Under such circumstances, its better to come up with: - Short term solution: A quick fix which can be Code rollback, disabling a config flag in central repo OR just auto-scaling infrastructure. This is helpful to quickly unblock end user. - Long term solution: This can happen in parallel of the short term fix. This involves ensure the performance issue does not happen again in the future.

It’s important to create a constructive feedback channel with your users and stakeholders. The channel should involve the following steps: 1. Collect feedback from end user on whether they are satisfied with the deployed solution. 2. Create a Root cause analysis doc with all findings that can be shared with end user. 3. Leverage the doc and other modes of communications to regain customer trust with our systems.

Human error, system race conditions OR other unforeseen issues are quite common as Software and the Product matures. Some mechanisms that can help prevent common performance issues could be: 1. Enhanced Observability: Creating metrics and alerts around every User facing services is critical to identify performance issues. 2. Creating and reviewing alerts: Proper alerting mechanism can help teams identify the root cause of the issue much faster and reduce mean time to recover. 3. Auto-healing: Once #1 and #2 are implemented, we can setup auto-healing mechanisms to avoid some generic issues.

Handling performance issues and bugs in production is not only a reactive process, but also a proactive one. You should always try to prevent or minimize the occurrence of performance issues and bugs in production, by following the best practices of program development, such as code quality, design patterns, testing, security, and performance optimization. You should also learn from your experience and improve your skills and knowledge, by reviewing your code, analyzing your data, documenting your lessons, and sharing your insights.
