They way I have found best use of in-memory databases is for platform optimisation. You would typically start to look at these issues once you have a more or less fully developed app and are at the stage of working out scale before going live. A good reason to to use one would be for frequently needed information. So for example, in the case of an auction app, you need to know things like current bids and winner identities. These would be stored in the database, but to save you resource you reflect these in memory in a semi-structured way for quick recall. Essentially is throwaway information you can quickly reconstitute should the need arise.

Depending on scenario, we can choose database. 1. If data is there in Organized format, then choose RDMS database like MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server etc. 2. If data is there in Not Organized format, then choose No Sql database like MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, and Neo4j etc. 3. If we want scalability, availability, security, and cost-efficiency then we can use cloud databases are Amazon RDS, Google Cloud SQL, Azure SQL Database, and Firebase etc.

Among the plethora of cloud databases options, Supabase began to stand out increasingly in my projects. It offered the ease of setup and management I was looking for, combined with the robust features of an SQL database, but in the cloud. This blend allows to leverage real-time data syncing and authentication features right out of the box. More generally, cloud databases seamlessly integrate into the development workflow, offering scalable storage solutions without the overhead of managing infra. The growing interest in cloud databases means that we can focus more on developing user experiences and less on database maintenance.

We don't overthink this too much at RaftLabs. If it's relational, we pick Postgres. Simple reason — we use Hasura, and back when we started with it, Hasura only supported Postgres. So Postgres became the default. If it's NoSQL, we lean towards DynamoDB. Works well for scale and low-latency stuff.

The most important thing I have found, is you should only ever get the information you need from a database, when you need it. Don't get more. It's not needed. Never be too ambitious. If your queries are getting out of hand, you need to think about the structure of the database. Perhaps your needs have changed and the database needs to reflect that? There is of course a trade-off between in memory and disk retrieval, but ever since the days of client-server, the least amount of data for the purpose, is what should get from the database. It's fast, it recall quickly, and you can optimise the response accordingly.

The format of this article is kinda backwards. The correct way to set up the question is: "What is the nature of your data?" Given that, you can ask "what kind of database should I use?" About 92% of the time the correct answer will be "a (mostly) normalized relational database hosted in the cloud." Also, there's no mention of vector databases, which are integral to machine learning + artificial intelligence.
