How can you optimize programming languages for collaboration and teamwork?

I have been working with a startup since the early days of my career and in my professional journey I’ve found that incorporating coding standards or any form of standardisation requires consistent adherence to rules. Whether it be during release phase of a project or the starting phase of a project, We should not rely on manual inspection to verify these on every Pull requests. These should be automated and need not to be solved again. A prettier file for formatting, an eslint file for linting and a Sonarqube integration that get triggers for a PR automatically for code quality goes a long way.

To create a standard for our team, the initial step is educating on certain standard elements. For instance, in my experience, I began by teaching two key aspects: 1. the '12 Factor' and 2. Design Patterns. This helped establish a common language within the entire team. Another effective practice was following the standards I set myself in executing a task and then asking the team, as reviewers, to assess them. When a common language is established for the whole team, you can be assured that 80% of the standards are adhered to in tasks where you are not directly involved as a reviewer. To keep these standards updated, we utilized knowledge-sharing sessions where the responsibility lay with team members.

While following a standard is a good approach, one should consider updating standards as new practices emerge. Do not use standards as an excuse to avoid changes. For example, if your team standard is to put several controllers' code in a file, it might be fine at the beginning of the project while the file is small. However, consider putting each controller logic in a separate file as the project evolves. Avoid the attitude of forcing new team members to follow bad practices under the name of "standards".

Don't reinvent the wheel, use tools proven by professionals, followed by professionals and most likely known by the majority of your colleagues. Stop being rigid in how people write code, no one cares if it's procedural, functional or OOP. What people care is to have fun and not having weird comments. As long as you're using: - static code analysis tool for identifying problematic patterns and security vulnerabilities - tool to identify bugs and security vulnerabilities and enforce coding standards to ensure consistent practices You'll be fine. My preference would be to define and formalize coding-format guideline using script/cofiguration based compiler tools like clang-format, which can be defined and applied to modify the coding-format and style at software component level, if not feasible to apply on entire project source-code, if some code is legacy or not meant to modify frequenctly.

A few important and useful practices which I follow while coding in Python: 1. Name your files, classes, vars and methods as concise and intuitive as possible. This helps make them searchable in one go and thus makes code navigation simple. 2. While catching the exception don't just log the error rather add a proper string along with it which makes it super easy for Devs pin point the function which caused the error. 3. When it comes to defining class, make them as granular as possible and try to follow the writing pattern of using decorators, context managers as ubiquitous as possible - so somebody looking at one file in the project should ideally get the holistic view of how other modules and files must be written in the same way.

Any work conducted in a team necessitates establishing standards across all areas where multiple individuals collaborate, in order to ensure unity. Decisions made collectively that evolve into standard operating procedures are the true strength of companies; this is what sets them apart from individual projects. When you know that you are going to create a simple stateless CRUD app with simple RDBMS operations and low requirements change in the coming years then FP is the way to go as OOP can become over engineering. On the other hand, it's always handy to invest time and energy on OOP, if otherwise. The judgement remains to the team on ground but must be well discussed before hand with long term vision.

Language paradigm should be adapted to the target application. The abstraction provided by a language comes often with a performance cost. Many applications simply cannot afford a higher level of abstraction, independently of the team working on it.

The programming style matters, but what truly aids in crafting a solid framework for developing new features is the architecture. This is derived from experience and occasionally requires an external perspective. For instance, we strictly followed a three-layered approach for a while, realizing its unsuitability for every project. Subsequently, we adopted DDD, which seemed promising, but lacked certain aspects of the three-layer architecture. Hence, we decided to merge the two. The choice between OOP and FP depends on the selected architecture and the testing methodology used. Personally, I prefer the Solitary testing methodology over Sociable in OOP. It's easier to implement using DI (Dependency Injection) and provides more convenience.

I believe I'm a firm supporter of OOP, it comes with its own set of complexities and learning curve as compared to FP. But for real-time and large scale systems OOP makes it very natural to architect the solution and establish a real world parallel entity relationship between objects. For straight forward scripting requirements, choose FP to achieve the desired outputs faster.

Always have unit tests in place, incase somethings breaks you can always relay on it, So as to debug whether the bug is in the feature or in the E2E

Code review process requires meticulous attention to ensure all involved parties are considered. Overwhelmingly large Merge Requests (MRs) can cause reviewers to overlook certain changes, leading developers to fatigue. Breaking tasks down into smaller components significantly aids this issue. Employing automated tools like Unit tests and Linters can ease the reviewer's concern about code style. Crucially, it's imperative to review all changes thoroughly.

Be aware of perfectionists in the review panel, it is very well know and can be empirically tested if "needed/wanted" that perfectionists end up affecting morale and just adding negative effects into productivity because of that. It is very difficult to fix perfectionists, but management should push for better reviewing process by discouraging perfectionist/nit-picking comments and focus on what is actually important like performance wise improvements, clearer code and the like.

However, when considering the core architecture for module selection, the first principle to consider is SOLID, specifically the Single Responsibility principle. Each module should be responsible for a single task, and any change to it should stem from a single reason.

Be mindful of overengineering; for example, a one-time-use script doesn't require complex architecture. .....................

Avoid massive refactoring/redesign when there is not real reason to do so... put special effort on getting good unit-testing when any refactor is going to be done to "improve modularity", if tests indicate problems fix them, don't add to the technical debt just because it is clever to code your app this way. Always put smart over clever. Smart will not do unneeded changes/abstractions and wont do changes that only add to the complexity of understanding and readability.

This may be tricky for junior developers but should not be a problem for senior devs. The whole team should do the design, with the senior developers guiding the junior ones. As a result, senior developers can transfer the knowledge to the other. Once the coding starts, one can define contracts between modules, such as inputs, outputs, and module actions. By doing this, each module can evolve at different speeds.

Yes, abstraction and modularity is good for building a software but it should be done wisely, overengineering can lead to total disaster.

Over-Implementing abstraction in the code surely makes it very difficult to test and even navigate through. So the principle that I keep in mind while writing my code is, look for niche opportunities to create a layer of abstraction for tasks like api parameters validation through decorators(in python), creating a custom paginator to receive a paginated api's response better. Something where abstraction actually helps save the day. Writing generic modular classes which are responsible to do only one thing and if needed adding interfaces to make use of the same classes at more places is also good practice.

As well multiple team members can work on individual components simultaneously thereby speeding up time to market. When an integration layer is used to abstract the core functionality from the overall system additional flexibility is achieved by allowing multiple interfaces to be supported without changing the core library while facilitating support for future interface changes when required.

My approach to design patterns is - "keep it simple silly"(Kiss). Don't cramp up all the design pattern names their usage and related things. Rather try to come up with the most organised way possible to tackle the problem at hand, get it reviewed by someone some seasoned senior dev and ta-da you'll find that you've implemented one of those classic design patterns or at least a version of it. Keep open eyes when you look at systems around you, nature is the best architect!

Having proper structure in the code in terms of architecture and design patterns as well as complying with it is really important. Even if the current structure is not ideal, having it is more valuable to have 1 structure than multiple ones. If structure needs to change there should be a good value gain as a result and should be done as a whole.

Before jumping into design and code, it is good to have sufficient brainstorming whiteboard session with whole team about the project, so that everyone is on the same level of acceptance and understanding and also documenting every thing properly for future teammates and collaborators so they can be on boarded with less trouble.

Unit Test: Unit Test helps in early detection of bugs in shared codebase. Team members can collaborate more effectively without being slowed down by late stage defects. Code modularity & Pair programming: Break code into independent and modular components. Independent modules allow for parallel development, enabling each pair/POD to work on different parts of system.

When developing code for each function consider the difference between a proto (proof of concept) and an optimized function. The proto version can be reviewed and stashed without further optimization. When reviewing the entire system and it's optimum function for timing, and other resource consumption then the sub function can be integrated and optimized as necessary.

Documentation is one important thing for better collaboration and understanding. We can achieve it by emphasizing the importance of thorough documentation, integrating documentation tools into the development process and by Encouraging the use of comments and inline documentation to explain code functionality.
